Amidst pain and sorrow Africa Skills is grateful learners were retrieved

It is with sorrow and sincere condolences that the George-based artisan training institute, Africa Skills Private College confirm that two of their learner-electricians were retrieved from the collapsed construction rubble at 75 Victoria St, George.
Regretfully they have both been confirmed to be deceased.
Sihle Mohle (28) from George was retrieved from the debris yesterday afternoon. She started her apprenticeship of three years in January 2023. Sihle was a learner at the Industria campus of Africa Skills for the last 16 months.

By request of the parents the identity of the second deceased learner who was also extracted from the deconstructed building material yesterday may not be released.

Both were conducting their scheduled host employer workplace exposure under professional supervision of a qualified artisan during the deadly implosion on Monday, 6 May.

According to Elsie Harmse, CEO of UXi Artisan Development, their Africa Skills George campus staff and learners were clinging onto the hope, and they continued praying for a miracle. “However, it is with deep sorrow that we’ve learned that both our learners have sadly passed away. The deceased have been positively identified by their respective families.”

“On behalf of fellow-learners, facilitators and the staff of Africa Skills in George I am sharing our sincere condolences with the parents, next of kin and other relatives. We visited both families, whilst in George and our hearts go out to them.”

Elsie says the families involved requested their privacy to be respected. “I would like to thank our Africa Skills apprentices, learners and staff for supporting the families over the past week with prayers and worship, and also for respecting their privacy now.”

Elsie says, “Amidst the deep sorrow of the relatives and of the Africa Skills family, we remain grateful that they were both found and retrieved, as their sudden departure can now be mourned, knowing they are with our heavenly Father.”

Victoria Street Building Collapse

9 May 2024

With sincere sadness and continuous prayers and hope in our hearts Africa Skills Private College in George and all at UXi Artisan Development are sharing our support and encouragement.

Two of our electrical learners are involved in this horrific disaster in George. By choice of their parents, the names of the respective learners are not shared.

Since Monday we have been personally and continually in touch and supporting their parents. We are grateful to say that a former Africa Skills electrical apprentice, Analisa Thomas (20) survived the implosion with minor injuries.

As determined, both electrical learners were working under the supervision of a fully qualified artisan to gain workplace exposure. The safety of our learners is and will remain our concern. Our hearts go out to every construction worker and relatives affected by this disaster.

Africa Skills is reaching out to all our learners on our George campuses as we join them in prayer and sharing at 18h00 on 9 May at the disaster site. Counselling services are available to relatives, learners and employees who need support. Please contact Africa Skills in George during office hours.

Africa Skills has been continually and is still supporting the ongoing rescue operation with onsite needs.

Please keep all the construction workers involved and their families in your prayers.
