OPEN LETTER TO MEC PHOPHI RAMATHUBA

Dear MEC

I trust this mail finds you well. Against a promise I made to myself about four years ago never to write another open letter again, I unfortunately find myself breaking my own conviction, for a good reason I hope.

You do not know me. And honestly you do not have to know me. I am just an ordinary South African who has no claim to fame. But of course, I know you. I know you because you are a politician, a public servant. But I know you mostly because according to reports I have read and seen, you are one of the politicians who are doing amazing work in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

You and your department of health in Limpopo have been flagged as shining stars in this regard, especially in the rolling out of vaccines. The numbers show that proportionally, you are fair ahead of the national average in this game. For that I commend you and your team, and indeed the government of Limpopo.

But we are human. Even when we have good intentions, sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes we do not win the support of everyone. It is a fact of life. Besides, we should worry when everyone agrees with us. We need others to alert us to our blind spots from time to time. And when they do, we have to be the bigger person and embrace the feedback, review and correct where we could have gone wrong.

This is what I thought should have happened when communication and reputation specialist Lorato Tshenkeng wrote an opinion article (bit.ly/3zO2KGD) last week questioning one part of your brilliant campaign. Lorato, from where I sit was polite in his critique. His take was both balanced and fair. There was no disrespect and there sure were no insults hurled at you. I saw worse on social media.

And to wake up today to the news that you have blocked him on Twitter left a bitter taste in the mouth. Frankly I think this is inappropriate and unnecessary. This is not what I expect of a public servant, and certainly not someone who has played the public relations game so beautifully. I still sit here and hope that he was blocked before the article. But even then, I would suggest that you unblock him. Anything less presents you as a thin-skinned, all-knowing person who prefers praise singers to honest feedback. You don’t strike me as that.

If anything, I would have advised you to actually, personally, pick up the phone and call Lorato and first, thank him for the balanced critique, and secondly, ask him for his honest view how you could have done it better and if the damage could be reversed. Not every critic is an enemy. Some are people who love your work and worry when you stumble and fall.

But of course, if, unbeknown to us, Lorato had been previously rude to you, in your personal capacity, you have the right to block him. But as a public servant, I’d still say you should not block him.
