Ikamva Labantwana Bethu (ILB) creates educational opportunities for the most deserving children from Crossroads township. It is the only independent educational programme currently operating in Crossroads, a community with a high rate of gangsterism, crime, and drug abuse.

ILB believes that the key to breaking this cycle of crime and poverty is access to quality education to reach university and employment. Ikamva Labantwana Bethu caters to learners from grades 4-7 by providing them with after-school homework sessions, Saturday tutoring sessions, mentoring, and winter/summer school programmes. The organisation is staffed by a team of dedicated individuals and tutors

Operating as usual

Today we joined hundreds of youth from Nyanga and Crossroads Townships who marched on the streets to mobilize for support to end Gender-Based Violence.

Lonwabo Jack, a 22 year old gay man from our community was brutally murdered and r***d on his birthday last week Saturday, 17 April 2021.

We want to thank our staff and youth council members for handing out fruits to all those who were part of this march, to IVATI for sponsoring the water and other stakeholders for their support.

We have adopted the Mahobe Drive Park in Nyanga as one of our Recreational Parks where children, youth, and parents will have access to a clean, well maintained and safe recreational space.

Thank you to the members of our community for joining hands with us in bringing the best out of Nyanga Township.

We also want to thank the Department of Public Works for their support in creating employment opportunities for members of our community.

For ILB to undertake the task of reviving Mahobe Drive Park, we require further support. Currently, we need the items below among other things…

- Plastic Bags
- Spades
- Rakes
- Uniforms for our workers
- Paint for Cement Tables and Chairs
- Fix Light Towers

These tools are crucial in creating a clean, safe, and well-maintained space for the community we serve. If you can help support us through a financial donation or a direct gift of equipment all and everything is greatly appreciated.

Soup Kitchen 🍜 A happy day for some of our children from Nyanga and Crossroads Townships!

We are equally saddened by the tragic passing of 4 children who drowned in a sand bank while playing next to the high way in Nyanga on Monday, February 8th.

Let's keep children supervised at all times. May their souls rest in peace!

During the weekend we hosted our Girls Camp.

The camp was fun, the girls enjoyed being away, they learned new skills, created new friendships, discovered new paths and met their mentors.

We strive to help young girls grow into strong young women who choose courage over conformity, who know right from wrong, and who value connecting and contributing to those around them.

We build girls of courage.

Our children enjoy the transformative and healing art sessions offered by The Astar Project. TAP has been running these sessions on a weekly basis since 2018.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child 2020!!

Today our adolescent girls commemorated this day in Strandfontein Beach, where they raised awareness about issues affecting young adolescent girls growing up in disadvantaged communities.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

We are very happy to walk this journey with our girls and together we will work hard towards a prosperous future.

Happy Women's Day!!

Read below letter from our intern who is assisting us to develop a Girl's Life Skills programme which is funded by EMpower - The Emerging Markets Foundation Ltd. This programme is preparing our adolescent girls to become strong and successful woman.

My name is Malikah from London. I am majoring in Social Sciences. I have been interning at ILB for 3 weeks so far. I have been met with a very organised team who have given me scheduled tasks to do throughout my time here. These tasks have included creating a girls’ life skills programme from details in a proposal covering issues such as bullying and speaking out.

My time at Ikamva has been extremely rewarding and has made me appreciate the power of education even more. My research skills have greatly developed during this internship which is crucial for me as a university student doing a degree in psychology. Not only has this internship increased my research skills, it has given me the opportunity to help people and make a change somewhere.

It has been truly fulfilling to see such an organisation that values the youth and wants to positively shape futures. I am grateful for my time here and am looking forward to the rest of my internship.

A letter from one of our virtual volunteers:

Hello! My name is Ava-Celeste Dujon and I am from the Bronx, New York, USA. I will be starting my final year at Smith College in September. I major in African Studies and minor in Spanish. I have greatly enjoyed my internship with Ikamva so far. I have learned how to design and format an informational brochure, which is something I had never done before. I have also enjoyed connecting with the team and learning more about South African culture through other parts of my internship program. I am looking forward to visiting someday!

Since the lockdown started many children have lost two important meals, breakfast and lunch which they normally receive at school.

During the Youth Month we started a soup kitchen where we provide soup and bread to over 100 children from Crossroads and Nyanga Townships two times a week.

Please support us to reach more children, increase our number of nutrition days and deepen our support during this pandemic.

Our team in Cape Town participated in a webinar that addressed challenges that girls, adolescents, and young women are facing and how COVID-19 has affected them. Some challenges being faced were mobility, access to technology, domestic violence, GBV, forced marriages, and harassment and confinement.
Nandita Shah, co-director and co-founder of Akshara Centre, mentioned that many are experiencing fear. Fear of the unknown and fear that what is happening is out of our control.
Participants in the webinar also spoke about the initiatives they are involved in to advocate and help others.
Some solutions include more sanitary pad giveaways, more food giveaways, access to internet, creating a safe home, work, and school environment for girls, and listening to what girls have to say so that they can have a voice and be heard.
We are thankful to have been a part of this important conversation! #COVID19 #herpointofview #education
