Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa).
I’m so excited to have this beauty in our gardens! It’s a tall, easy to grow shrub that needs full sun.

The leaves have a rhubarb-like flavour and can be eaten raw or cooked as a spicy version of spinach.
The fresh/dried calyces can be made into a refreshing drink by boiling it in water (until the water turns red), then adding sugar and/or ginger, cloves, nutmeg. The flowers (rosella) are included in some commercial herbal teas.
Hibiscus makes a refreshing, drink that is rich in organic acids, and has many health benefits.

Another interesting plant in the gardens at the moment: Gomphocarpus physocarpus or commonly known as old man’s balls 😉 Fast growing annual Milkweed, hardy and indigenous to South Africa. It’s a fast growing pioneer annual.
Nectar source for monarch butterflies, and munching paradise for monarch caterpillars 🐛🐛🐛🐛 .
