HMM Algeciras - world biggest containership- Maiden Trip Rotterdam

The arrival of the HMM Algeciras, officially the world's biggest TEU carrier at the Port of Rotterdam yesterday marked a milestone for the shipping industry. With capacity for 23 964 TEUs, the vessel will carry 19 621 TEUs on its maiden voyage – itself a record number. The Korean vessel was completed at Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering’s Okpo shipyard on 24 April. It is 400 metres long & 61 metres wide. HMM is the 9th largest container shipping line globally and has ordered another 11 vessels in this class.

On the 13th of May the Port of Beira has received for the first time a Panamax container vessel. The "MSC Gina", a ship built in 1999 and operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has a length of 259.50 meters, and 32.2 meters of beam. She can load up to 4056 TEUs.

The vessel was guided through the access channel using modern control and management systems of vessel traffic (VTMS) of the Port Authority CFM and its berthing was assisted by two new high power tugboats that arrived a few months ago and have now been successfully been put to the test.

The arrival shows the confidence of MSC in the growing Beira Corridor and is the first of many ships of this size that will be introduced on the MSC services calling the Port of Beira. With better economies of scale, the Beira Corridor will become even more competitive.
