On 9 August 1956, about 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government's control over the movement of black women in urban areas. It is important to take time to think about the role of women in the struggle and recognise their courage and perseverance. It also gives South Africans the space to reflect on the ongoing struggles our women face today, not least the scourge of gender-based violence

On 16 June 1976, thousands of students in Soweto took to the streets to protest against the inferior education they were receiving and against the implementation of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in black secondary schools at the time. The clash with police left hundreds dead or wounded, and the graphic photo of 12-year-old Hector Pietersen's lifeless body being carried through the streets of Soweto, killed by a police bullet, horrified the world on the front pages of newspapers everywhere. The violence erupted and quickly spread, disrupting schooling across the country. For the first time in our history, the youth of South Africa had made their voice heard.
The uprising played a significant role in the evolution of our schooling system, with Wynberg's diversity enriching our school greatly; it is imperative that our boys are made aware that they have inherited a schooling system more democratic, more aware, and protective of our youth and their rights, and that they have far more say in decisions regarding their schooling due to those who sacrificed so much nearly 50 years ago.
While we remember the struggles of those who marched on 16 June 1976, may we always uphold the rights and responsibilities of our brothers and sisters of our rainbow nation.
