On the 24th of January, Herzlia joined proverbial hands with the community of Van Riebeeck Park and the Cape SAJBD to plant yellowwood trees. This is an extension of the Tu B'Shvat celebration where we start our new year with trees. It was the perfect day to gather under the trees that had already been planted decades ago and to know that we are providing shade for the generations to come after us and contributing to the natural ecosystem. We learned that there is no planting of trees this year (the seventh year) in Israel since the earth needs to rest. This was a beautiful collaboration between the Friends of Van Riebeeck Park, represented by Gary Anstey (who put in a lot of effort for this ceremony), the Cape SAJBD, represented by Craig Nudelman, Daniel Bloch, Tyla Dallas, and Adrienne Jacobson and Herzlia. The Environmental Committee from Herzlia was represented by Rachel Castle and Lauren Klein along with members from the SLC - Mila Smith, Lilla Fleischmann, Benji Anstey and Jared Daitsh. A special thanks to Rabbi Swaine, Geoff Cohen and Shane Brorson for officiating and supporting this ceremony. Mr Blumenthal, Mr Frauenknecht and the mentors from Grades 7 and 8 brought their students safely to the park, on the corner of Chapel Road and Highlands Avenue. They brought bags to collect some of the trash in the park - this was a wonderful idea! Deon Louw, the representative from Greenpop, came to support us in the tree planting while offering helpful tips on our to gently place our trees in their new homes. Francine Higham, the councillor of Cape Town, graced our ceremony and help us to plant the trees. We could not have captured this event without the expertise of Tanya Steyn and grade 8 pupil Zack Daniel behind the camera. We would not have been able to hear one another without Kim Brorson's amazing sound system. Thank you to all the people who came together for this beautiful collaboration between Herzlia and the community.
Mazaltov to Herzlia's Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams for achieving outstanding results in the STEM and Language and Literacy categories. Four Junior High teams participated with two teams placed 1st in South Africa and another two teams achieving honorary certificates. TOM provides the opportunity to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative enterprise, excellence, and teamwork.

FPV Drone Racing is a new discipline coupling aeromodelling and immersion flight. Herzlia is proud to have hosted the Inspire Drone League schools division last night, where pupils had the opportunity to engage with professional drone pilots and test their own drone flying skills.

Drone flying skills can be transferred to real-world and in-demand careers such as aerial photography and videography, and collecting vast amounts of imaging data. These high-resolution images can be used to create 3D maps and interactive 3D models, which have many beneficial uses. The opportunities are endless, making it an attractive profession for our pupils.

The Grade 9 pupils have been working on their EMS projects in the Makerspace this term. They are busy planning and developing a product from beginning to end and it's safe to say that the students using the Makerspace for their projects are really getting their hands dirty and learning how some of the power tools such as circular saws work under the guidance of their teachers and Innovation Centre Staff. We look forward to seeing the end products.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mr John Mills, a beloved past Deputy Principal of Herzlia High School and Mathematics teacher par excellence.
Mr Mills began teaching at Herzlia in 1969 and retired 40 years later in 2009 having served Herzlia with distinction as a legendary, inspirational and outstanding Mathematics teacher.
Renowned for his ability to draw a perfect circle by hand and respected as a master educator, Mr Mills went on to teach scores of Herzlians with passion and enthusiasm; he believed that a "teacher is only as good as his last lesson".
He had a number of wonderful sayings that I’m sure most of his pupils will remember such as “shape up, or ship out” and “train hard fight easy”. And his all-time favourite; “Pie R Squared, Don’t Be Scared”.
He was a true legend, a man who devoted his working life to our community's youth and I know for sure that all his past pupils will remember him with great fondness.
We wish his wife of 50 years our sincere condolences and that his memory will be a blessing to her and all those who knew him.
