Some exciting news from our Alumni Desk. Participants involved in our Skills Development Programme recently graduated after successfully completing their courses. All participants had to attend 2 compulsory trainings: work readiness training and an accredited communication course. These training courses provided the young participants with the necessary skills and tools which are vital for placement and the working environment. Congratulations on your achievement Ikamvanites!

The film features personal stories of individuals affected by TB, including experiences with diagnosis, treatment and social stigma. Learners from our IkamvaYouth Makhaza Branch in Khayelitsha participated in the closing workshop of the 2023 Learner Doccies Programme focused on “Representation in Global Health”.
The workshop was a collaboration with Associate Professor Esmita Charani and Associate Professor Sipho Dlamini from UCT’s Department of Medicine. The workshop focused on how people in the Global South are represented in images related to Global Health and tackled difficult topics such as ethics and representation. Learners provided insightful feedback and we look forward to further work around this important topic

The TygerBurger published an article about Octotel’s Career Expo in Fisantekraal which was attended by our IkamvaYouth team in the Western Cape. The event brought together students, brands, and local organisations to explore diverse career opportunities, foster community growth, and highlight the advantages of high-speed fibre connectivity. It explores the personal experiences and impact of TB on individuals, families and communities.

Grade 11 learners from our IkamvaYouth Umlazi Branch were invited to the Durban University of Technology for a “Take a girl child to work” experience. This fun filled day started off with a bang as The university donated computers and stationery packs to the school, where our IkamvaYouth Umlazi branch is based. The learners were paired with mentors, learners then were able to experience what goes on in the world of work first hand. Our IkamvaYouth Chesterville Branch in partnership with the Durban University of Technology started their own Architecture, Design, and Engineering Programme, which supports and capacitates learners interested in pursuing technical design-related careers like architecture, engineering, and town planning. The project is for Grades 10 and 11 Engineering and Graphic Design (EGD) learners. The weekly sessions encourage learners to solve design problems by developing an idea, product, or service that will also have a potential commercial value.

During the month of October, Grade 9 learners from our IkamvaYouth Umlazi and Chesterville branches began robotics and coding sessions run by AlgoAtWork Robotics Academy in partnership with the Chemicals Industry Education and Training Authority. The programme will run for the next 10 months, exposing our Grade 9 learners in KwaZulu-Natal to the world of robotics and technology, and subsequently aiding in broadening their career opportunities and prospects.

Eh!Woza hosted a youth workshop with learners from our IkamvaYouth Kuyasa and Makhaza Branches at the Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha. The workshop was centred on mental health and was led by Xhosakazi Ngonzi, a Social Worker alongside students from the UCT Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine
The session was filled with team-building activities geared towards promoting gratitude and positive thinking.

As part of the Learner Doccie Programme with EhWoza, learners from our IkamvaYouth Makhaza Branch learnt how to use a DJIGlobal osmo pocket camera. Our learners also got the opportunity to participate in a media workshop facilitated by the EhWoza team which demonstrated the fundamentals about shooting documentaries.

Our IkamvaYouth Atlantis, Gugulethu and Makhaza teams represented IkamvaYouth at the YearBeyond Career Fair at The Cape Town City Hall. The event was attended by more than 1 000 ambitious YeBoneers and the Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde. IkamvaYouth joined more than 80 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 who offered various opportunities in their sectors, including including Agriculture, Banking/Financial, BPO/Call Centers, Manufacturing, Retail, Nature Conservation, Education, Tech, Hospitality and Tourism.

As a result of the collaboration between The Oliver Khan Safe-Hub Playmakers and our IkamvaYouth Gugulethu Branch, 3 Grade 10 Learners were invited to the Hectic Nine9 studios to be part of The GEN Z Pop Quiz Challenge. Litha, a Grade 11 learner made the Gugulethu Branch proud as she progressed to the semi-finals of the competition. Congratulations to Litha for this outstanding achievement.

Lihle, a grade 9 learner from our IkamvaYouth Makhaza, shared his experience at the science workshops, which are held at the UCT Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine as part of the Learner Doccie Programme with EhWoza!
“I have been fortunate enough that my group and I got to travel to UCT four times this year. During the time there, we created our own hypotheses and did some research on them. I felt like I am a scientist and I learnt that when scientists conduct research they have to make it relevant, and that the answers from this research can benefit a lot of people. I wish I could travel to the Institute daily!”

MAINTAINING DEPRESSION is a short documentary film shot and edited by Grade 9 learners from our IkamvaYouth Makhaza Branch in Khayelitsha. While young people suffer from depression and anxiety everyday, we often overlook the struggles of our mothers and our grandmothers, who face very similar realities and responsibilities. The learner-produced film reflects the authentic experiences of older women diagnosed with depression and their daily challenges in dealing with the condition. It features interviews with women who share stories of living with depression, medication, stigma, struggles, and how to overcome them.
The documentary was shot and edited by Lulutho Mgayi (16), Phumzile Seaman (16) and Hlumelo Tshingana (15), as part of the Eh!woza Learner Doccies programme. Check out the full video on EhWoza’s YouTube channel here

Our Community Collaborations Partner, the Thuto Pele Centre, hosted a holiday programme for 199 Grade 11 High school learners. The Grade 11 special intervention programme was requested by The Principal from Morris Isaacson High School to prepare them for the 2024 academic year. 12 Tutors were involved in facilitating this programme, and Thuto Pele chefs cooked daily nutritional meals for breakfast and lunch to ensure learners could focus in class. The centre educates learners through art to help them develop critical thinking and interpersonal skills which assists with problem solving.

The African Leadership Academy in partnership with Project Management Institute Education Foundation invited 22 learners from our IkamvaYouth Chesterville and Umlazi branches to be part of the Leadership Accelerator bootcamp. The accelerator seeks to develop future leaders who will work together to address Africa's greatest challenges and achieve extraordinary social impact. Grade 10 and 11 learners from our IkamvaYouth Diepsloot Branch in Gauteng welcomed Global Robotics to the branch to host a Robotics workshop. This took place during the Spring School holiday Programme. Learners were able to develop their technical knowledge through the creation, design, assembly and operation of educational robots.
The Robotics workshop also highlighted the academic requirements needed in order to pursue careers in technology and robotics. Thank you to Global Robotics for your investment and support.

Every year we celebrate World Mental Health Day on 10 October. The theme for 2023, set by the World Foundation of Mental Health, is ‘Mental health is a universal human right’.
World Mental Health Day is about raising awareness of mental health and driving positive change for everyone’s mental health. It’s also a chance to talk about mental health, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to get help if you are struggling.

The third cohort of learners from our IkamvaYouth Makhaza Branch in Khayelitsha visited the UCT Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine to participate in their first science workshop. The workshop forms part of our on-going partnership with EhWoza.
During the session, learners learnt about TB, how it is transmitted and how one can be protected from it. Learners will also get the opportunity to go to the lab and do some experiments and the results will be seen in our next science workshop.

As part of our efforts to increase online safety awareness, our IkamvaYouth Diepsloot Branch in Gauteng invited the Film and Publications Board to our branch to facilitate a cyber security awareness workshop with our learners and tutors. The aim of the session was to ensure that minors are protected from cyberbullies, predators and cybercriminals who can be very opportunistic by taking advantage of minors with little to no knowledge of the cyber space.
