"For me it is always about the people... their input, their dedication and how they care for each other." – Ikamva Labantu founder Helen Lieberman

When Helen was invited to address Herzlia's Grade 10, 11 and 12 pupils as part of their Women's Month assembly series, she turned the spotlight on three incredible women who helped set up Ikamva Labantu - and a young man who put himself in danger to save Helen's life.

This video is a recording of Helen's address, and her stories about Mildred, Dado, Zora and Sipho. It is powerful, moving and inspiring.

Helen talks about the abandoned baby she found in a field, who Dado went on to raise, and who is now a doctor; how Mildred and Zora refused to let frequent arrests extinguish their desire to risk it all to see positive change in their communities; and how Sipho felt the need to protect Helen because one of Ikamva Labantu's food kitchens gave him meals when there was no food on the table at home.

Thank you to Herzlia High School Student Body and Mensch for the opportunity to share these stories and highlight how we all have the power to inspire change.

HeForShe Herzlia: Let's build our collective voice!

The only way to fully honour and respect the memory of Holocaust victims is through acting as a unified community with pride in our Judaism and remembering our heritage.

We are taught to remember the Holocaust, remember the six million Jews who perished. The world must remember in order to learn from this genocide and make sure it never happens again to anyone, we remember to honour and to add meaning to their inhumane deaths.

Remembering those murdered for their beliefs is not only about honouring them and their families, but also to fight those who deny such atrocities ever happened.

We must remember that the Holocaust is more than a lesson from the past. The human cost of the loss of six million lives is emotionally incomprehensible; consider what could have been achieved by those who died, what could have been discovered, written, invented and prevented. There is a long list of Holocaust survivors who have positively contributed to society but they represent a tiny portion of the talent and promise of the generations of European Jews lost to us.
Many did their best to adapt to their surroundings by building new, ordinary lives for themselves. Nevertheless, the bereavement caused by the horrors of broken families and friends was a disaster of huge proportions which caused unimaginable grief and suffering which is still prevalent today.

We must remember because murder is the greatest crime that can be committed. The Holocaust was not the murder of six million people, but six million individual murders. Remembering the Holocaust is an important act in itself, and honouring its victims, both Jews and other victims, particularly those with no family left to remember them. This is a further reason why the remembrance of the holocaust is so important.
What we have to keep in mind when commemorating the Holocaust is that memory must function as a positive force. It should not be used to inflict guilt and vengeance and certainly should not be the defining element of Jewish life. We need to raise the future of the Jewish people to be proud and confident of who they are.

With increasing numbers of anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic acts occurring more often as time goes by, there is no better time than now to act and remember what happened.

We remember the holocaust!

And will never forget.

Breaking down Gender Stereotypes is the first step towards Gender Equality. It is vital to realize that no hobby, colour, job, emotion or way of behaving/looking is only suited to a female or only suited to a male. We should all have complete freedom of choice and expression. One of HeForShe Herzlia’s goals is to break down Gender normative stereotypes within our school as these are the first step towards a hostile and sexist environment. Saying “You run like a girl”, “man up” or “She’s too muscular for a woman” severely promotes negative gender stereotypes that are incredibly damaging. We need to make a conscious effort to stop this promotion. From today, we ask that you all take this into consideration and join us, in this little action, on our journey to Gender Equality. 👫⭐️✨

- HeForShe Committee

08/04/2019

We are so proud to launch an exciting new committee at Herzlia High School: HeForShe!
The HeForShe Committee is a new committee under the Student Affairs and Social Affairs Portfolios. It is registered with the United Nations and aims to fight for Gender Equality within our school and wider community. It aims to invite men to the conversation around Gender Equality and encourages men to support women in their struggle. Both men and women are encouraged to join and form a collective voice.

We really encourage all the men in our school to join this committee as we cannot effect change without everyone's voice. It is our duty, as men, to stand up for women.
It is important to note that this committee will, by no means, revolve around men and the needs of men in terms of gender equality - This committee is in the interests of women and women's struggle with Gender equality! It is forming a collective voice, striving for equality.

We are so excited for the future of the committee and cannot wait to see it prosper within our school environment!

Beit Midrash Morasha was more than just a place of prayer: for some it was a second home, the place of their Bris, Bar Mitzvah, naming, Bat Mitzvah, Weddings. It was the place where people came together to sing and dance, cry and laugh. It is a scintillating piece of South Africa's Jewish History. But I don't think that it's a coincidence that Arthur's Road Shul burned down during the Festival of Light, the Festival of Miracles.

Chanukah means rededication. After the Second Temple was desecrated, the Maccabees rededicated the Temple to Hashem using a tiny jug of oil they found and Hashem caused it to last for eight days until more oil could be made.

So too, Beit Midrash Morasha will be rededicated to Hashem. At a time when there was little hope, the oil lasted for eight days. Now, as the Cape Town community mourns the loss of the six Sifrei Torah, we will need to be strong and support each other, until we can rededicate Morasha to Hashem.

On behalf of the whole of the United Herzlia Schools, the Student Representative Council want to send strength, solidarity and love to the community of Beit Midrash Morasha. We are thinking about you and holding you in our prayers.

We will do everything in our power to assist you in these hard times ahead and help to rebuild Arthur's Road Shul to its former beauty.
