Over the past few weeks, we have shared a lot of information on the importance of bilateral hand use in childhood development. Activities that encourage bilateral hand use helps children develop underlying skills necessary for cutting with scissors and handwriting. Please share, like, or leave a comment if you would like to know more about this subject.

Using utensils like a knife and a fork can sometimes be a real challenge for children with motor planning of bilateral integration difficulties. Such a nice idea from the Perth Children's Occupational Therapy to support developing this skills:

" Quick tip to help with cutlery skills. If your child is having trouble with the grasps and coordination required to use a knife and fork, two stickers placed where each index finger should go can make a big difference. Thicker handles also help. Practice with soft foods like bread or sausages before progressing to tougher foods like steaks. Kids don’t usually master this until 6 or 7 years old"

We had so much fun using our Tangram Puzzles today. Tangram puzzles can help develop stronger problem-solving abilities and is a fun way to engage kids in perceptual planning activities.

What is a tangram?
Invented in China approximately 200 years ago, a tangram is a two-dimensional re-arrangement puzzle created by cutting a square into seven pieces -- seven geometric shapes called "tans" (Slocum et al 2003).

House chores are an excellent way to improve bilateral hand use and coordination. Beneficial activities include:
• hanging washing on a line, wringing out a facecloth, washing dishes
• help with baking activities, for example, mixing ingredients, whisking
eggs
• help with cooking activities such as cutting vegetables, peeling
potatoes, and making sandwiches
These are just a couple of ideas to support the development of bilateral
integration or the ability to use both arms while participating in school related tasks .

Bilateral integration enables successful participation in classroom-related activities such as cutting with scissors, writing, using a ruler etc.

Children who struggle with bilateral coordination might present with the following difficulties in the classroom:
• do not stabilize the page while writing
• difficulty drawing lines and using a ruler
• struggle to stabilize the page while using scissors and cutting
• struggle to sharpen pencils, using an eraser or a glue stick
• difficulty with folding and tearing activities.

It can also lead to slow work speed, frustration and untidy written work.

Bilateral Integration.

Bilateral integration is the ability to use both hands in a coordinated way while doing tasks such as cutting with scissors, writing, coloring and pasting with glue. The ability to use both hands during writing or school-related activities is often
overlooked and should be encouraged during activities as often as possible.

Today we share a Father's day creative activity with lots of opportunities to support bilateral hand use. Please share your fun ideas with us.

Can the inability to use your hands in a coordinated way, influence the way you write, cut, color, and play?
The ability to use both hands during writing or school-related activities is often overlooked when discussing handwriting.
Bilateral integration is the ability to use both hands in a coordinated way while doing tasks such as cutting with scissors, writing, coloring, pasting with glue, and using a ruler or eraser. A child who struggles with the coordinated use of his/her arms or hands will have difficulty with various activities in the classroom and it will impact their ability to work neatly.

This spatial planning activity provides so many opportunities to support early development. It was so much fun to create the different patterns and objects while at the same time developing some fundamental skills.
These skills include:
Strengthening hand muscles (pencil grasp, fine motor development)
Encouraging the use of both hands (bilateral integration)
Planning, problem-solving, and visual perceptual skills.
