Dotted pictures to improve fine motor skills and pencil control - When holding a pencil with a dynamic 3 point pencil grasp, we also need to move the three fingers holding the pencil. This is called refined finger movement of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Refined finger movements enable controlled movement of the pencil for drawing, writing, and coloring. Dotted pictures provide lots of opportunities to practice refined movements of the writing fingers and improve pencil control.

This resource includes a collection of “dotted pictures” with varying dot sizes to accommodate different ages and skill levels. An occupational therapist developed this resource to provide an activity framework to improve fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and pencil control using dotted pictures.

These are “pre-writing patterns,” with the average (not prescribed) age at which children are developmentally ready to copy/form these pre-writing patterns. Before children are expected to write letters and numbers, they should be encouraged to practice and master pre-writing strokes and lines in a multi-sensory way. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g., copying these pre-writing patterns) is known as “Visual-Motor Integration.” ⠀

Playdough is a creative way to practice fine motor skills and consolidate perceptual development concepts such as letter, shape, and number concepts, color recognition, body scheme, to name but a few. It has the added benefit of strengthening hand muscles for the development of fine motor skills.

This resource includes all the upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet in A5 and A4 format. Experiment and consolidate early learning of the alphabet letters in a fun and age-appropriate way by building them with playdough.

Print, laminate, and play. This resource provides hours of fun-filled learning.

Most of the activities needed to develop fine motor skills for handwriting can be done without using writing utensils such as pencils and crayons? We use the same fingers to manipulate tweezers, sq**rt bottles, stamps, stringing beads, pegs, etc., that we use to hold our pencil correctly while drawing, coloring, and writing. Incorporating some of these activities into your daily routine will provide those little hands with a much-needed workout in preparation for handwriting.
