To the DBE

As an educator for nearly 14 years I would like to request the following before the return of NORMAL school, post COVID.

1. Go back to the old style of teaching methods, before OBE and CAPS. I can recall having to stand at my desk and recite the times table from 1 to 9 every morning. I remember being taught so thoroughly by my teachers, and being questioned on a daily. Teacher/learner engagement - aplenty - and certainly having to complete less tasks! Back then tasks were exciting and you couldn't wait to visit the library to gather your information. Now tasks are so many, and done haphazardly.

Let teachers do more teaching, for teaching, and less teaching for task completion.

2. Remove these tasks. Yes tasks have been slightly reduced recently, and definitely alleviated the marking process somewhat. As educators we are pressed for time in class. Hence we teach for task teaching, hence we rush through everything, hence we see so little improvement in kids, especially those with learning disabilities.

3. I implore you please please please keep the classes as small as they currently are. Our public schools have up to 50 if not more learners per class; my current largest class being 47. Which I, thank you Lord, have not needed to teach as a full group as yet. However IMAGINE the size of the class and those kids squashed in it. Primary and High School teachers have finally been able to assist the kids they would not have been able to identify in those huge classes. Those very kids who have now been recognized as a concern will once again get lost in this system. Why? Teachers have to finish the tasks you have set out for the kids, and everyone needs to be on the same pace. But hey that matters not right? That kid who gets lost, will pass anyway as a result of you. How many kids do you think are lost and pushed through the system because the teacher can simply not find the time to identify and sit with, nor assist those in need of it. There is not enough space for the teacher to move around in those big classes. The teacher is inundated with admin and marking and unfortunately has no time to constantly go back to the kids who need to be identified.

However if those classes were to remain smaller, MAYBE we educators would be able to find the time to assist those kids instead of letting them slip through the system. The classrooms are too full so now YOU force teachers to just progress kids! Build more schools! Employ more teachers! Add more schools to a growing economy!

This brings me to point number 4.

4. Stop progressing kids because of AGE, because of years in a phase! What is that? Why! That child could, SHOULD have been identified years ago, in early primary school. measures could have been put into place, the child could have received remedial class (if one existed), could have been assisted rather than pushed through a system which supposedly don't want to fail them - but is in essence doing just that - FAILING THEM BIG TIME! These kids are so ill equipped; they cannot read or write, nor understand basic comprehension. Why! Because they were pushed through the system, based on their age and years in a phase!

This brings me to point number 5.

5. Bring back those after school, extra classes and activities, where people from other institutions avail themselves to assist our kids. Stop leaving everything on the shoulders of teachers. We need outside assistance too, invest money in education and assisting us as teachers.

6. Bring in motivational speakers again. I remember rugby players and artists coming to my school; and I was motivated by their encouragement and life's journeys. Many others who persevered despite their environment; with morals and values and the will to rise above their circumstances. They gave us an insight into the possibilities out there; and the opportunity to realise there are a myriad of means to achieve ones goals.

7. Invest in sport! Invest in communities! Why canโ€™t DBE host soccer, rugby friendlies or camps for our youth. Please I beg you, go and see for yourselves the struggles of our learners. Help us get them off the streets.

8. Invest in guiding our kids outside of school hours. Create centres for kids where they can have fun and are exposed to mentors, and a big brother/big sister programme.

9. Stop pushing the button and giving the kids marks. Come out to our schools and find the time and energy, as we do, to sit with these kids and figure out where they are struggling and why. Stop giving them those marks so your results can seem good on paper per province. Stop inflating the Reilly's to inflate your egoes. The job isn't been done as well you proclaim. You are not sending them out into the world properly equipped. This is an injustice to our kids.

10. Stop dictating! Stop sending your circulars sitting in front of your laptops assuming that you know what goes on in OUR schools and OUR classrooms and having often unreasonable expectations; for the sake of competing with other provinces. Do right by our kids and our teachers from whom you want more admin than anything else.

Yours in REAL education

Calling any companies, donors, sponsors, NGOs, financial aids or other types of financial support systems out there to URGENTLY contact me PLEASE. You can even tag them and I'll make contact.
These learners, families and schools NEED HELP AND SUPPORT with the school fees matters. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

So I'm sitting in class , folding financial statements and all my learners have this big "BROUGHT FORWARD" amounts. It got me thinking that if this is just my class, what about the whole grade, the phase, the school and all the other schools in disadvantaged areas.
Yes it's not a lot for big schools but it's a lot for these schools and families that have a DAILY STRUGGLE with poverty, unemployment, basic necessities and other needs. And it has only became worse due to the pandemic. It actually breaks my heart because it's an added stress or pressure for the learners and their families but also the schools. The school fees plays a huge role in teacher salaries, classroom conditions, safety, the environment and even the resources.
We can really assist the families and the schools and MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE.

๐Ÿ“—๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“•๐Ÿ“™So help me make that difference and spread the word.

A reminder to be blessed this week and inspire your learners to be the best version of themselves in all circumstances๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐ŸŒˆ

As a teacher , there are so many things that I can tell you about your children, their environments, their homes, their parents, their mannerisms and even their feelings.

It's important to set healthy boundaries in all aspects of a child's life and trust me its starts with parenting โค๐Ÿ™
I challenge you to pay closer attention to your kids , ask them about their favourite things and what truly makes them happy. And I can guarantee you'll have a happier child, a happier home and better results at school ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐ŸŒˆ
