As part of their 5-day field school, the Geology first-year students visited the Rising Star cave system. This iconic site, known for the monumental discovery of Homo naledi, offered them invaluable insights on the Malmani Subgroup dolomites, including:
🌍 Cave formation processes
🌍 Sediment deposition and fossil preservation within caves
🌍 Formation of speleothem deposits and their mining during the early 1900s
This hands-on experience not only enriches their academic journey but also connects them to the very fabric of our ancestral history.
The first-year geology students at Geology have just wrapped up their 5-day field school adventure! Hosted at the scenic Krugersdorp Nature Reserve, these budding geologists had the opportunity to hone their skills in basic geological field techniques. 🏞️
Diving deep into the heart of the Earth's history, the students explored and mapped the iconic rocks from both the Witwatersrand and Transvaal Supergroups. These hands-on experiences are essential in understanding geological processes. 🌏
Professor Marlina Elburg (UJ Geology HoD) and Professor Nikki Wagner (Cimera - DSI - NRF Director) were invited to participate in the inaugural African Critical Minerals Summit in Sandton this week.
