Where it all began…
(Swipe to see today!)
Back in 2006, I got my first classroom job. It was at a charter school in Cleveland. Young Mikey was anxious to make a difference in the lives of kids, and he couldn’t wait to get started.
I can’t find pictures of my first classroom, so this is the classroom of my 2nd year of teaching. It’s the same school, but I looped with my kids and moved to a new room in a different wing of the school.
Clearly technology has improved over time, and the picture makes it look super dingy. But I promise it was light and bright in this space!
18 years later, and I’m in a bright remodeled classroom in a different district, and some things have changed. I have new teaching partners, I’m teaching a different subject area, and I prioritize my own health and wellness first
But the one thing that remains the same is that my passion for my students’ growth and happiness is as strong as ever.
Where was your first classroom? Comment below and let us know!

It’s time to retire some of the very first products that I made. They’ve served me and my teachers well, but they - to be blunt - need to be overhauled and it’s just too much work for me right now.
I’m sending 17 products into retirement, but before I do, you can snag them for $1 each!
Take a look at the link in my bio!
Most of the products are social studies related, but you can also find some math and language arts in there as well.
This sale ends on January 7, 2024. These products will be retired on the 8th.
Thanks for your support of teachers, products! ;)

Cal heard the news out of Florida. He’s pi**ed.
In all sincerity, the idea that Florida teachers are supposed to teach that enslaved people had ANY SORT OF BENEFIT from slavery is ridiculous and racist and awful and deplorable and…. the list goes on.
It’s unacceptable.

Summer vibes at the lake. This is how I rest, relax, and rejuvenate myself.
As a trauma survivor and now a trauma practitioner, self-care and self-love is part of my daily routine. Some days that’s simple affirmations and a living room dance party; other times I need a full reset like a peaceful evening at the lake.
As much as we want to barrel through and focus on the kids… you’ve gotta take care of yourself first. It’s not selfish. It’s trauma-informed.

When we have kids who flip their lids - and let’s be honest, we have flipped lids every day - we can’t help them if our lid is also flipped.
There’s nothing wrong with taking a second to stop, breathe, and then decide how to help. In fact, research tells us this is encouraged.
How do you self-soothe? How do you calm yourself? Do that first, THEN help the child self-regulate.
You got this! 😊

I love art. It's gorgeous, it makes you think, and it inspires you to feel, to live, to question, to discover. Humans are a special piece of art! We get to be all the "things" and we can still grow and transform into new masterpieces as we go.

One of my absolute favorite ways to teach SEL skills is to use picture books. When I designed this resource for Crazy Hair Day, the idea behind the activities was to get kids thinking about what they say to one another and how much it can affect them.
Do you have kids who need reminders for speech bubbles and thought bubbles? 😉 {Hint: we ALL do!}

Identifying and validating emotions in our students is critical to their social and emotional health. Educators need to validate these identities and help students learn how to validate their own emotions, as well as the emotions of their peers.

The picture book The Most Magnificent Thing is a great example of how we can use literature to help instill Social Emotional Learning skills into our students' hearts and minds. This book can help you educate students on topics such as perseverance, goal setting, asking for help, being creative, and goal setting.
Engineering anything can be difficult and takes time and creativity. In this book, readers will experience the struggle of a girl who is trying to build her most magnificent thing. She comes across several barriers as she is working, and she ends up getting frustrated and flipping her lid. She eventually comes back, takes pieces and parts of each invention that she's already made, and succeeds in making her most magnificent thing.
This resource includes a two-page lesson plan and ten student-driven activities that focus on SEL topics.
This resource is entirely compatible with Google™ Slides and also has a printable version!
