“Our games teacher is Sir Tharvan Lal. He is a very good person. He has a very beautiful nature and is also the best in games and very serious when the tournament is about to get started. All students say that he is a very kind-hearted person who cares about his students. In every tournament, we win one or two cups, all because of him. Sometimes he also used to teach us Hindi because he was good at the Hindi subject. Sir has lots of good habits and good qualities. He is such a wonderful teacher. Whenever we have a game period, he explains very clearly how to do this and that. He directly focuses on what he wants in the games. What I like most is that he is a strict person and, most importantly, always stays positive. This is all about my favorite teacher, Sir Tharvan Lal.”

Sending wishes for an auspicious and most wonderful Buddha Purnima!

According to most Buddhist schools, this celebration is held on the full moon of the fourth month of every year. Depending on the tradition, it can be called Vesak Day, Saka Dawa, or Buddha Purnima. The celebration honors the three pivotal events in the Buddha's life: birth, enlightenment, and death. It's said that karma around meritorious actions is multiplied.

Recently, the Siddhartha School celebrated Bhoti (sometimes spelled Bodhi) Language Day. Bhoti is Ladakh’s native tongue, which some say is a dying and lost language. In keeping with our mission to give the children of Ladakh, India, access to a rich, thoroughly modern education that is in harmony with their Himalayan heritage and their culture, the school-wide day was dedicated to Ladakhi traditions. Here are the wildly beautiful photos captured by the school's secretary, Mr. Tsering Angchuk, who provided the following captions.

Photo 1:
A girl wears a traditional dress from the Zanskar region, a southwestern area of Ladakh in the Kangril district.

Photo 2: A student wears his phogos and a belt containing cutlery blades, a slingshot, and other multi-use tools. This belt is mainly carried by nomads and herders.

Photo 3: Above, a fifth-grade girl in traditional dress is carrying a tsepo, a multi-use basket made from weeds and willow sticks.

In honor of International Women's Day, we are featuring Miss Padma Chonzom, a 2017 graduate who has gone on to graduate from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce (DCAC), University of Delhi. When she graduated, she was one of the district toppers grade-wise, and for women's day, we bring you her art and story.
Currently, Padma is preparing for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) job selection, a Government organization which conducts the recruitment of candidates in different specialties for various ministries and government departments in India. It is a highly sought-after and competitive career path.

Beyond civic work, Padma is highly passionate about nature photography and has developed work specializing in photography of Ladhak's mountain landscapes.

Last month, her photograph (the last image to the right) was selected for Ladakh's Pride, a week-long festival organized by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in collaboration with the Centre for Himalayan Asian Studies and Engagement (CHASE).

She also made a short documentary film, Echoes of the Himalaya, in which she casts her Shepard grandfather from Gya Village, who is a traditional medicine practitioner of Amchi. The film is about the importance of mountains and pastoral Ladakhi landscape for medicinal herbs and the drastic impact global warming is having on the decline of such a treasure. We wish her the best of luck in her pursuits and we are proud to have her as a Siddhartha School Alumna.
