After dedicating most of his life to public service and the fight for equality, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will celebrate his 90th birthday by spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

According to the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Trust, the Nobel laureate will also attend a special thanksgiving service at St George's Cathedral.

Tutu, who retired from public life in 2010, was born in Klerksdorp in 1931.

After working as a teacher, he studied theology and was ordained as a priest in 1960.

In 1984, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his role as a unifying leader figure in the non-violent campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa".

In an effort to help increase research into the disease, Tutu has now given his name for the establishment of a Chair in Urology at the University of Cape Town.

Penny Liknaitsky- Trail blazer

Penny Baadjes, Hartzenberg, Liknaitsky was born on 20 July 1955 and passed away on 26 July 2021. At the time of her untimely death she was studying towards her Masters.

As a Sintonite she matriculated in 1973 when Mr. Franklin Joshua, affectionately known as Pops, was the Principal of the school. She studied at UWC, became involved in the anti-Apartheid struggle and was detained in 1976 along with Cheryl Carolus and Colleen Lombard. She was amongst the first female educators at Sinton to be University trained when she started in 1984.

She was a dynamic, energetic, exciting Geography teacher and Head of Department who made her subject come alive. She went beyond the prescripts of the subject to organize Egyptian and Brazilian exhibitions as well as introducing Cuba to students which culminated in an exciting Cuban Programme in 2001.

Passionate about the environment, she organized for her students to represent South Africa at an Environmental conference in Salem, Massachusetts in the USA. This resulted in a visit to Sinton by teachers from the sister school in the USA as well.

She was involved in an Indigenous Garden Project with Mr. Morkel and the Biology department. She was well connected and we owe her a debt of gratitude for Mr. Mandela’s visit to the opening of the Indigenous garden in 1992. He did this to honour the school for its struggle against Apartheid. There is no doubt that as an excellent organizer and visionary, she brought a great deal of publicity to the school.

Her class room was the neatest, most beautifully kept and reflected her passion for her subject. She was meticulous, very well organized, very precise and did not suffer fools gladly. She was an important member of the Masinga Coffee club at Sinton when I met her in 1985. She and I organized the hosting of the successful Mass Meeting against Rationalisation in education in 1996. Two Thousand people attended and this led to the formation of the Western Cape Parent Teacher Student Forum (WCPTSF) which fought Rationalisation, OBE and which won substantial gains for education. This enabled us to keep the spirit of fighting against injustice and inequality alive as had been the tradition at Sinton. She was forthright, knowledgeable about her subject and was instrumental in me getting tenure at Sinton.

She left the school in 2001 to become a Subject Advisor at Metro Central, WCED where she encouraged Geography teachers to be the best they could be. She retired in 2021 at the age of sixty- five after more than 36 years in education.

We look back with pride and yet sadness for although she had retired, she still had so much to give. She was well-travelled, principled, an excellent organiser and an asset to Sinton and the broader community.

Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched. May Her Dear Soul Rest In Peace.
