The What’s Shaking? Music and Dance Party is a live, interactive 60-minute concert for young people (ages 0-7) and their adults. Shows include Mr. Ryan’s original poems, songs, and a few classic covers. Shakers and children’s instruments are shared for a “drum jam,” call-and-response games, dance breaks, and more!

It's a free show, so grab your littles and come through. Lots of cool vendors, art experiences and plenty of shakers to shake, scarves to dance with, and shakers to shake!

ABOUT THE BAND: What’s Shaking? Music is a multi-generational collective. Local musician and educator Ryan Glass, known as “Mr. Ryan” to Buncombe County littles, is creator of What’s Shaking?, a pre-school music and rhythm curriculum. He had been teaching this curriculum in Buncombe Co. preschools since 2013, but during the pandemic, he decided that What’s Shaking? needed to be more than a class. As things opened up in 2021, he got his friends together and they began offering free, monthly music and dance parties for kids at Sweeten Creek Brewery throughout the warm season.

Mr. Ryan plays the keys and sings, and his friends include Elaine Scott on vocals and percussion; Jeff Jeffries on live drums; Alli Marshall on vocals, percussion, and puppets; and Will Wittmeier on electric guitar.

Heya! What's Shaking, friends?!?!

We're back for another great season of What's Shaking? Music and Dance Parties, and the 1st show of the season is this Saturday at Kidsfest! Come through and support a great local organization Buncombe Partnership for Children! We'll be playing from 12:30-1:30, following the great Elmo! (not even a little scared!)

We're excited that Eliza Bell Photography will be taking beautiful pictures at our free Kids Fest event on Saturday, April 8. We'll be at the YMCA Youth Services venue (201 Beaverdam Rd., Asheville) from 10 am to 2 pm. Sesame Street's Elmo character will be meeting and taking pictures with kids and families from 10 - 10:30 am, 11 - 11:30 am, and 12 - 12:30 pm. We can send you either a digital copy or a printed copy of your photo!

We've had some wonderful shows so far this summer and are looking forward to a couple more times to dance and sing with our friends before the warm weather ends.

Ever wonder what a What's Shaking? Music & Dance Party is like? This photo offers some important clues. Most importantly: We play music WITH you, not AT you — and everyone who wants to join the band is encouraged to do so.

That doesn't mean you have to jump up onstage. We bring LOTS of percussion instruments so everyone can play drums, shakers, and more. Bring your favorite instruments from home, too! Or keep it simple and bring your claps and your dance moves.

We're not playing any public shows this month (Don't worry! We'll be back the first Saturday in September!) so we've been missing singing and dancing with our friends. Here's a fun What's Shaking? poem that you can practice on your own.

Here's a fun project for the summer: Make your own shakers! There are lots of household items that second as perfect percussion instruments, from pots and pans to plastic buckets. Making music doesn't require a trip to the instrument store — just a little imagination and DIY spirit. And remember, two of the BEST percussion instruments live at the end of your arms. That's right: Your hands!
