Thank you to those who attended our June 7th Doctors Speak Out program!

While adverse childhood experiences are directly linked to health challenges later in life that can impact life expectancy, such outcomes are not predetermined, experts from Georgetown University Medical Center explained at Doctors Speak Out: Early Childhood Development Research on June 7 at Georgetown.

Moderated by Phyllis Magrab, PhD, the panel shared insights on their work to support children dealing with toxic stress, ranging from refugees in the Middle East to residents of impoverished neighborhoods in Washington, D.C.

The first few years of a child’s development are critical, the panelists agreed. Opportunities to promote healthy development in children start in utero during the prenatal period, said Deborah Perry, PhD, speaking about studies on the positive impact of nutritional programs for low-income women, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Matthew Biel, MD, encouraged attendees to support legislation in Washington, D.C. that would dedicate more resources to early childhood development.

As a parent, Neal Horen, PhD, explained that one of the positive influences in the lives of his children was a grocery store worker who often asked them about school and their hobbies. Whether one has been through adverse childhood experiences or not, adults can support children in their lives by taking an interest in them, showing them that they are valuable members of their communities.
