Fun With Building and Boxes, a project from Ms. Ketler 21/08/2023

This week, we’re helping a Jackson Heights, NY Pre-K classroom expanding their library with specific books. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured project.

Swedish-Americans on Donors Choose is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.

This Jackson Heights PreK teacher has an ongoing project that keeps her students in touch with real specific books.

Project: Fun With Building and Boxes
Resources: This year we are starting a new curriculum and we would love to add some books that are specific to the areas we will be studying.

Economic need: At this school, more than 50% of students are Black, Latino, and/or Native American, and more than 50% come from low-income households.

Location: Jackson Heights, NY

Total: Total project goal $195.69

Project description by Ms. Ketler
I get to spend every day with a group of 18 wonderful Pre-K students with a variety of language and academic skills, and it is so much fun!

Our classroom is brimming with creativity at all times.
Every center lets my students utilize their imagination to the max, and the block center is no exception.

My students build anything you can possibly imagine, from high chairs for the babies to ramps for the cars, to planting beds for flowers. The possibilities are endless and they take full advantage of every block that is available. We would love to have some books to ignite even more imaginative play in the block center, so any help is appreciated.

This year we are starting a new curriculum and we would love to add some books that are specific to the areas we will be studying. We will spend some time exploring boxes and everything they can be used for so we would love to have books to help us learn.

Thank you so much for all your support!

For the first time since somewhere in 2020 I have put in a new school project. I haven't done this for a loooong long time now. Please join us in our efforts to fund this classroom project.

Swedish-Americans on Donors Choose is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund school projects that has (mostly but not always) a Swedish connection in low-income neighborhoods and our conduit is always DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools. Swedish-Americans on Donors Choose have funded 1,628 school projects in 1,224 schools for 1,394 teachers located in all 50 states, excluded this effort.

Project: Growing Plants!

Teacher Mrs. Weston wants supplies to allow her Georgia kindergarten students to grow flowers from seeds, along with some books about plants and springtime. This is her description about her school classroom project:

Resources: Help me give my students resources to teach them how to grow a garden for spring!

Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households.

Location: W G Nunn Elementary School, Valdosta, Georgia

Total: $164.60

Still Needed: $̶𝟏̶𝟔̶𝟒̶.̶𝟔̶𝟎̶ $26 STILL NEEDED

Project description by Mrs. Weston:

My Kindergarten students are the brightest cookies in the bunch. They are so willing to do their work to the best of their ability and always wanting to learn more. I want to give my students the opportunity to extend their learning in science by planting plants with them this year.
My students will be able to learn all about the plant life cycle through the resources that are needed for this project (seeds, soil, gloves, a humidity dome, and books).
I love to do this project with my students in the Spring. This is a great way to introduce the new season and to have beautiful flowers ready to go home for Mother's Day!
