Curriculum & Instruction / Social Studies Resource Adoption 21/04/2022

A message from the district:

“USD 232 Families –

The school district is providing an opportunity for parents to review social studies resources to be recommended for possible adoption. Curriculum resources support the instruction of identified state standards. The materials recommended for each grade level will be available on Thursday, April 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Cedar Trails Exploration Center (atrium), located at 8201 Mize Blvd., in Lenexa.

This come-and-go event will allow families the opportunity to explore specific grade level resources recommended by staff committees to support Social Studies instruction. The Board of Education has not yet made any decisions. Individuals will also have the opportunity to submit written questions and/or comments.

Background
The school district initiates a process to review instructional resources to support an area of core instruction every seven to ten years on a rotating basis. The adoption cycle is based on the anticipated changes made to state standards. The first step is a review of essential state standards, followed by a review of current resources, curriculum guides and curriculum maps. Over the course of several months, potential resources are identified and reviewed by teachers and staff. Following a lengthy process, a recommendation for resources, if any, is presented to the Board of Education for consideration. The come-and-go event scheduled for April 28 is another step to provide transparency. You can learn more about the current social studies resource adoption process by visiting the district’s website.

Schedule a time THIS WEEK to watch this.

Thanks to the foundation we have the opportunity to watch this film at our convenience this week only. So mark it on the calendar to watch with your teens and tell your parenting and caregiving partners to do the same.

The USD 232 Education Foundation is proud to partner with the district and host a special online screening of ANGST: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety the week of January 31-February 6.

ANGST is a film-based education program designed to raise awareness around anxiety, with an emphasis on youth and families. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, experts, and parents with the goal of helping people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and encourage them to reach out for help.

Starting on Monday, January 31 through Sunday, February 6 families in our district will be able to watch ANGST as a Virtual Screening from home anytime that week. Also included with the film will be an informative, paneled discussion lead by the film’s experts and filmmakers.

The link to gain access to the film ANGST will be active starting at 5:00 p.m. on January 31 > https://bitly.com/33NwdoF

A message from the district:

January 13, 2022

USD 232 Families –
School is cancelled for Friday, January 14. This is in response to the high number of staff absences due to COVID-19 and other illnesses. Concerning for the district is the number of teacher absences and the difficulty in securing substitute teachers this week.

The district has had nearly 100 teaching positions unfilled this week, requiring school and district staff to try to fill the gaps. For Friday, January 14, nearly 20 percent of classroom teachers are already not available. This is having a negative impact on our daily instruction for students. This challenge does not take into account absences among our school support staff.

Additionally, student absences for illness has been between 10-11 percent for the week. The decision to cancel school for Friday was not taken lightly. We hope the four-day weekend (no school on Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday) will provide the recovery individuals need to avoid further disruption to the learning process. Students and staff will return on Tuesday, January 18.

JCPRD also cancelled
The before and after school childcare program offered through Johnson County Parks and Recreation District is cancelled for Friday because it is also facing its own staffing challenges.

High School Activities
Activities that are scheduled at the high school level may continue if the activity can be staffed. Any cancellation information would come from the coach and/or sponsor.

Test to Stay & Learn
The curbside COVID-19 testing option is also cancelled for Friday, Jan. 14.

Our district - and just about every district across the country - is experiencing an extreme sub shortage. District staff from the administrative office - including Superintendent Harwood - are currently filling in as subs, but as Dr. Harwood mentioned during our Monday Board meeting, this is not sustainable.

If you or anyone you know is willing and able to become a sub for our district, links to more information are provided below:
