On 10 September 2024, Dr. Theng Vouchlay and ITC students joined a field survey with Prof. Yoshimura Chihiro from Tokyo Institute of Technology to carry out a field survey at Tonle Bati, Takeo province as part of the collaboration project on "Photoproduction of radicals and their effects on carbon dynamics in tropical lakes". The objectives of the water sampling are to characterize the properties of dissolved organic matter and quantify the photoproduction of radicals in tropical lakes which help in assessing the impact of solar radiation on water quality, ecosystem dynamics, and biogeochemical processes in the tropical lakes.
Congratulations to Lika! ๐
Her hard work and dedication have paid off as she secures the prestigious Master โs degree scholarship in Thailand!

The management team of PAER conducted an orientation for 22 new students onPAER lab. management, safety and rules, and lab. entrance exam. The orientation aims to strengthen the organized, safe, and productive lab. practice. Research ethics and some tips on how to have an organized and productive research activity were also shared. After the meeting, students were invited to visit the lab. The lab. visit was conducted in 2 out of 3 (Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Microbiology Lab.). The orientation was completed successfully as all students were able to understand the lab. rule, safety, and ready to get the exam on the up coming week.

Tonle Sap Lake (TSL) in Cambodia is the largest freshwater body in SouthโEast Asia and one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. The lake and its ecosystems are widely under threat, however, due to anthropogenic activities occurring inside and outside its basin (e.g., water infrastructure development; land use change), being poorly understood in most aspects. This study provides an updated review of the state of knowledge of the TSL ecosystem, as well as important research directions for sustainable lake environmental management of Tonle Sap Lake by focusing on four major topics, including climate change and hydrology, sediment dynamics, nutrient dynamics and primary and secondary production. The findings of this study suggest anthropogenic activities in the TSL basin, as well as the Mekong, in combination together with climate changes, are key contributing factors in the degradation of the TSL ecosystem. Insufficient accurate data, however, precludes quantitative assessment of such impacts, making it difficult to quantitatively assess and accurately understand the ecosystem process in the lake ecosystem. More efforts are recommended in regard to environmental monitoring in all subโbasins around TSL, assessing seasonal changes in nutrient and sediment inputs corresponding to water level and flow changes, assessing cumulative impacts of water infrastructure and climate change on the ecosystem dynamics, and elucidation of ecosystem processes within the lake's internal system.
