It's National Memo Day. This day was created to honor memos, known as short documents, used for conveying information quickly and efficiently. The use of memos dates back to Ancient Greece and has been an essential part of business operations since then. On this day, it's important to take some time out of your busy schedule to appreciate how much easier memo technology has made life in the home and office environment. Take a moment to celebrate National Memo Day and send one to a colleague or friend!

LETS GO continues to provide internship opportunities for local college students to gain valuable experience in the STEM, Fundraising, and Communications fields. We provide hands-on experiences in their areas of interest at our partners sites in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Washington D.C. Each intern works with seasoned professionals, engages in networking opportunities, learns valuable teamwork and communication skills, and has a direct impact on the students we serve.

We are fortunate to work with talented and enthusiastic students from Loyola University, Morgan State University, and starting this summer, UMBC. If you or your company is interested in learning more, or would consider sponsoring an intern, please contact us at: [email protected]

Today is National Technology Day! Technology is everywhere and is part of practically everything we do. Technology drives innovation and helps us to accomplish huge feats, from propelling humans into outer space to viewing the particles that make up an atom. GPS systems get us from Point A to Point B, our thermostats keep us warm in winter and cool in summer, and mobile phones tell us the time, the weather, how our favorite sports team did last night, and so much more.

In our role as educators, technology is indispensable. It keeps us connected to one another, and allows us to reach new students, organizations, and supporters with our mission and teachings. LETS GO is grateful for the ability to inspire and serve youth that technology gives us and encourage you to consider how tech helps you in serving others today.

Teacher Appreciation Week is a wonderful time to express gratitude and celebrate the hard work of educators. LETS GO is thankful for each of the many teachers who help shape the minds of all students, keep them engaged, and share their passion for education. We are especially thankful for those teachers who work at our partner sites in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Washington D.C.

The first National Teacher Day was observed on March 7, 1980. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association established the first full week in May as Teacher Appreciation Week. Since then, the National Education Association (NEA) has also observed National Teacher Day on the Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week 2.

Join us in celebrating all teachers and remember to thank your teacher today and every day!

May 1st is National School Principals Day! Today, we recognize the achievements of principals across the country, whose hard work is essential to creating positive educational environments. The example shown by principals’ leadership and dedication is what allows students to prosper, and teachers to encourage their students to excel.

Without principals, schools cannot accomplish their necessary work, and so today we would like to thank each and every one of our school principals for their undying commitment to helping students achieve their goals and reach new heights. A special thanks to the principals of our partner schools, whose assistance is integral to LETS GO’s mission. Be sure to thank your school principal today!

Thank you to everyone who attended LETS GO's 15th Anniversary Gala last Thursday. It was a fantastic evening as we celebrated our impact on Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Washington DC. It was also an opportunity to honor our Founder, Dr. Clark "Corky" Graham, whose vision and leadership continue to inspire us. Thanks to the LETS GO Board of Directors for their leadership. A special thanks to each of our sponsors who supported the gala. Finally, a huge debt of gratitude to Councilwoman Phylicia Porter, for being our guest speaker.

LETS GO 15th Anniversary Gala 11/04/2024

We are two weeks away from our 15th Anniversary Gala on April 25, 2024. The lifeblood of what we do is rooted in our incredible staff, both current and past members. We asked them to share their favorite memories and why they are committed to LETS GO.

Amanda Porter, Education Manager in Baltimore City stated, "I love teaching STEM to kids in Baltimore City. During the school day, there is not enough time to teach as much of the content. I wanted to be able to share my passion for STEM with the teachers and students." Amanda has two favorite memories, "These are tied, but my first memory is the FLL (FIRST LEGO League) Team that won a championship 6 years ago. The other is anytime we do the disappearing water trick lesson in the 'It's not Science, It's Magic' show. I love to see the amazement people have."

Kandace Shields, Regional Director in Anne Arundel County and DC, remarked, "I was drawn to the mission. It was the perfect integration of my background working in Education, STEM, and my personal experiences and beliefs. I wanted to continue to do work that served others." Kandace also shared her favorite memory, "Assisting 5 students from DC to become the first group in their community center to participate in the First LEGO League Robotics Competition. The transformation from the beginning of the season to the end was profound not only for the students but us as staff members. It took a lot of climbing for us to get there, and the students stuck it out. They were committed, and at the end of the season, they were proud. Not just the adults of them but them of themselves. Hands down the best moment ever for me."

Carnell Arrington, Education Manager in Baltimore City explained, "I choose LETS GO because I felt they were an organization that was genuine in helping make my city a better place. Corky and I had about an hour-long conversation, and we talked about everything from religion to finance to STEM. After all the interviews, I continued to research LETS GO and stumbled upon an interview from Corky and why he started LETS GO and I was sold." Regarding a favorite memory, he shared, "My favorite memory is a funny one. I was at Lakeland last school year to support our JESS Kindergarten - 1st grade class. I heard a kid named Hunter say, 'This is the best day of my life.' Hunter was reacting to how much fun it was to do Elephants Toothpaste during the JESS class that day."

On Monday afternoon, students from Wolfe Street Academy in East Baltimore gathered outside to witness the solar eclipse. In preparation, the students learned about eclipses, and wore special safety glasses to observe the event. The occasion received coverage from WJZ News. This event was a fun and educational experience for the children, who got to witness a rare spectacle that will not occur in Baltimore for another 20 years.

A solar eclipse will pass over the United States this Monday, April 8th. While Maryland is not in the eclipse’s path of totality, the eclipse will still be visible, and is set to peak around 3:21 pm in Baltimore.

If you plan to view the eclipse, make sure to wear proper eye protection, as even sunglasses will not prevent the possibility for eye damage. Baltimore’s Pratt library is offering a free but limited supply of eclipse viewing glasses, so give them a visit and protect your eyes! This rare event is set to pass the Northeastern U.S. for the first time since 2017, and is not set to return until 2044, so try to catch this amazing phenomenon while you can!

LETS GO’s 15th Anniversary Gala is 3 weeks away. We recently spent time with LETS GO alum, Janiya Woodlon. Janiya attended Westport Academy during her elementary and middle school years. Janiya talked about her early interest in STEM, and remarked, “Math and Science were always my favorite subjects.” When asked how she connected with LETS GO, she shared, “I started in 1st grade at the Westport Boys & Girls Club. Later, I was on the Robotics Team and participated in the competitions. I worked with LETS GO in the afterschool program at Westport.”

Janiya attended high school at The Baltimore City College and continued her interest in STEM while focusing more on engineering. In 2023, Janiya graduated from Morgan State University. She stated, “LETS GO allowed me to experience different aspects of the field. I did not know what career I wanted when I was younger, but I knew I liked technology and engineering.” While at Morgan State, Janiya majored in Civil Engineering. As a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, Janiya attended the Black Engineer of the Year Conference, where she could network and learn about internship possibilities. It was there that she connected with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

After graduating, Janiya joined the Corps as a Project Engineer and moved to Tampa Bay, Florida. She shared, “In my role, I work with a variety of contracts. I am the Point of Contact. I love it here and hope to remain a long time.” When asked about following your dreams, Janiya offered, “I wanted to live in Tampa, but I was nervous. It was a leap of faith. I would say, don’t be afraid of things, be willing to branch out and experience new things.”

Reflecting on her experience with LETS GO, she offered, “Thank you to everyone at LETS GO for believing in me. I would not be where I am today without them.” On career advice to younger students, Janiya remarked, “Just because you don’t see people who may look like you, don’t be discouraged. Go ahead and follow your dreams.” We continue to believe in you, Janiya, and wholeheartedly agree with your sage advice.

Fun with a Focus on the Future – a First Time Coach Perspective on the Impact of Maryland Science Olympiad

This was my 1st year as a program manager in Science Olympiads. I taught myself how to do a build event from the rules, and went on to teach students at Morgan State how to do it. They've been working really well together as a group, and the teacher/coach said the teamwork and organization this year on this build was much better than last year. It's been great to watch these students working together to solve problems and make their ideas a reality. The MSO program puts students in challenging and engaging situations, which can be formative in their development as STEM scholars. Overall it was a great experience for me and for the students, and I look forward to continuing as a MSO program leader.

Today, April 2nd, Is World Autism Awareness Day. LETS GO would like to take a moment to recognize the unique challenges faced and contributions made by those on the autism spectrum.

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is estimated by the CDC to impact over 5 million youths in the United States alone. Every child with ASD may learn and interact with others differently; yet this does not devalue their accomplishments, abilities, and voices as people. We at LETS GO support those with autism and seek to uplift their unique voices, and we encourage you to do the same, today and every day.

Our Story

Founded in 2009, and receiving its 501(c)(3) status in 2010, LET’S GO operates in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area to break the cycle of poverty through STEM education and workforce development. Through partnerships with schools and youth organizations LET’S GO establishes high-quality, ‘hands-on minds-on’ STEM programs for youth in under resourced communities. We provide effective capacity building support to our partners through customized strategic planning, program coordination and evaluation, volunteer training and management, hands-on STEM professional development workshops and instructor coaching, curriculum selection and development, and ready-to use materials. We focus on STEM because, in today’s information age, STEM-related jobs are some of the fastest growing jobs in the country and 80% of all jobs will require STEM literacy and skills.

Success in our modern economy requires a wide set of skills, including STEM content knowledge, digital literacy, leadership, and strong problem-solving and team-building abilities. All youth need access to high quality STEM learning experiences to develop these skills, so they’re prepared to fulfill their potential. LET’S GO recognizes the importance of engaging students in STEM early and continuously. With endless real world applications, informal STEM activities help students engage in project-based learning in a team environment, develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, and practice risk taking and perseverance while learning.

While all youth are capable of learning and great success, too many lack the resources and support necessary to persist in STEM education. LET’S GO STEM Scholars, youth with demonstrated STEM interest and persistence, participate in a variety of STEM activities and competition teams, school and career exploration and family engagement events designed to further develop their STEM identity -- a youth’s internal belief that he or she is capable of being successful in STEM or STEM-related fields in school and beyond. By developing collaborations and partnerships with local universities, STEM industry professionals and other STEM providers, we connect youth with mentors, internships and STEM experiences to help them succeed in education and the workforce. LET’S GO believes that reducing poverty in under-served communities requires the empowerment of a generation of youth who internalize the belief that they can pursue successful STEM careers and STEM related careers.
