Unfortunately, we still have several bus turnarounds that are snow and ice covered. The turnarounds combined with the refreezing of snow that has melted today will make us unable to go back to school tomorrow, January 15. This will be NTI day number 5. Teachers and staff will be in the buildings if your children need anything.

We had an amazing team of people who packaged meals for the week and we served 259 students today. Thanks to all who helped and offered to come and assist. We sure miss our students and it was good to see some of them come with their families today.

Monday, January 13 and Tuesday, January 14 will be days 3 and 4 for Non-Traditional Instructional Days. Staff should read their emails for information regarding the NTI days. We had a positive response to families wishing to pick up food for their school-age children. We will be providing a week’s worth of breakfast and lunch food items. Meals can be picked up from the high school cafeteria on Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you haven’t signed up and would like to come and get the food, please complete the survey found in the news section of our district webpage. This helps us know how many to prepare. We will prepare a few additional meals and welcome you to come if you don’t have access to the Internet to sign up.

Meal Survey 09/01/2025

There will be no school tomorrow, Friday, January 10th. There is a new snowfall that is predicted to start around noon tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a traditional snow day. With the continued cold weather and additional snow predictions, it is likely we will be utilizing some NTI days next week. If we do continue to be out of school, we are looking into the possibility of preparing some meals for our families who may need them. Please complete the form on the District webpage or District page if you would be interested in coming and picking up food at the Powell County High School next week. We are really missing our students and want you to know that if there is anything you need that the schools can provide, please reach out to your child’s school.

Meal Survey There is a possibility that we may be able to prepare some pre-packaged meals that could be picked up from the high school cafeteria next week if we continue to be out of school. If you would be interested in picking up meals for your school age children, please complete this survey.

There will be no school for students Wednesday the 8th or Thursday the 9th. These will be traditional snow days for students. Thursday will be the make up day for staff of the staff planning day that was supposed to take place on Monday. Staff should read their email for important information.

It looks like Mother Nature wants to extend our winter break. We are cancelling the staff planning day that was supposed to be Monday, and school will be cancelled on Tuesday. This will be a traditional snow day and not an NTI day. We will evaluate the rest of the week once this major winter weather event has passed. Please stay safe and warm and enjoy the beauty of the snow.

We would like to thank Kim Hall for 9 years and 2 months of service on the Powell County Board of Education. Ms. Hall has served the district well throughout her tenure, and she has always remained student focused. We also welcome our newest Board member, Mr. Mark Collier, to the Board. Mr. Collier has been attending Board meetings for several months, which will help make the transition very smooth. He and Board members Brenda Crabtree and Kathy Merriman have all been sworn in and are ready to serve in January alongside Lisa Mays and Diann Meadows. We appreciate Judge Sara Combs very much. Board members have to take the Commonwealth's oath of office for public servants and a second oath specific to Board members. We look forward to the upcoming year as we all work to serve the students and families in our community. Congratulations to all those who were sworn in today for their respective offices!

💥 Volunteers of the Week💥

This week’s Volunteers of the Week are doing an extraordinary volume of work while being extraordinary elementary students!
Kids Who Care Club (KWCC) at Clay City Elementary School started in 2021 primarily by the efforts of teachers Melinda Richardson and Julia Richardson. The primary goal of KWCC is to help change the lives of people in our community and our world. Melinda Richardson states, “We want our students to know that they can make a positive change in the world. There is often so much darkness in the world; we want our kids to be a light for others! We want them to understand that little acts of kindness add up and that they can help change our world.” Currently there are 22 fifth graders in the Kids Who Care Club and one student mentor.

These students are doing volunteer work in their community, school, country and even their world! Some of their projects include:
…making blankets for the Linus Club, a national organization with a chapter in Owingsville. Blankets are distributed to foster kids, kids with cancer, kids who have been abused, children who have lost parents, etc.
…completing a Christmas bag and a spring/Easter bag for residents at the nursing home. They make cards, ornaments, activity books, crafts, etc. for residents.
…raising over $4,000 to build a well in a village in Africa. They did this by selling chocolate bars during the past school year.
…holding Thanksgiving food drives to help families in our school who need a little extra help during the holiday.
As they continue doing ALL of these projects, they have also started some new projects this school year. They held a penny drive for Hurricane Milton victims, donating $250 to help people in Eastern TN and North Carolina. They are also making scarves for both veterans and the homeless this year and dresses for Little Dresses for Africa, an organization that clothes girls in Africa. The students are also planning another Africa project this year as well.

“I joined the Kids Who Care Club because I wanted to help out other people around the world that needed help with things. The project I am looking most forward to is getting to paint the flower pots for nursing home residents. I’ve also enjoyed all the other projects we have done so far because I know it’s going to good causes.”
-Jaxton

“I enjoy being in the Kids Who Care Club because I get the opportunity to help people in need. This club helps make the world a better place. I’m looking forward to helping the kids in need through the project Little Dresses for Africa.”
-Ellie

“I like being in the Kids Who Care Club because I like helping people in need and helping to make the world a better place. My favorite project is making blankets for the children who have been abused.”
-Bryson

Allowing the students to serve the world around them and help the world on the other side of the globe teaches the students so much more than just volunteering. Thank you to the students who are doing this great work and to the teachers who are taking time to lead these students!

We would like to congratulate Ronna Donithan, PCMS Youth Service Center coordinator, for being recognized in the FRYSC IMPACT Report Spotlight for 2024!!! The Division of Family Resource and Youth Services centers received 887 submissions from FRYSC centers across Kentucky and only 79 were selected for the Spotlight. This honor not only demonstrates a passion to work with families and students, but also the ability to measure outcomes for said services, programs, and activities. Thank you for all the work you do for the students and families of Powell County Middle School and across the district!!!

💥 Volunteers of the Week💥

Helping the community is an important value within the FFA ( Future Farmers of America) organization. And the local chapter at PCHS is actively doing their part to assist the community and make a difference!
Partnering with the Youth Service Centers from each school in the district, PCHS’s FFA reached out to families in the district who could use a little help this year. Their goal is simple: to feed families in need all across the school district for the Thanksgiving holiday. 125 baskets were handed out to families in Powell County on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day!
The project involves the entire 200 member strong FFA chapter and this was their 3rd year completing this volunteer community project. Adam Ledford, 2024/25 Powell County FFA President, shares, "This is the most meaningful project I have ever been a part of during high school and I am so grateful that our FFA chapter is able to make a real difference in our community during such difficult times. I hope this project continues for years to come!
Great job students! Your attitude of giving and service is something for which we can all be thankful!

With cold rains and temperatures dropping quickly through the night there is a high chance of bad roads in the morning. There will be no in person school tomorrow, Thursday, December 5. We will use a Non-Traditional Instruction Day tomorrow. Please follow the directions that your teachers have given you for instruction on an NTI day. Staff should report to their work locations at 9:00 and should check email prior to coming in case anything changes.
