Kia ora Facebook whanau. I have been working with Patuharakeke Te Iwi Trust's Taiao unit at Poupouwhenua (Mari and Marsden Banks) for the past 2 years as part of my PhD research. They have worked tirelessly, in the face of extreme industrial and commercial impacts (particularly from the refinery and port expansions) to restore the mauri of these incredibly important shell banks. They have been closed to all harvesting of all shellfish, through traditional Rāhui and under section 186a of the fisheries act, since 2018. Patuharakeke have just applied for a further two year extension to this 186a closure as there has not been any significant recovery to date. At this stage, the continued Rāhui, supported by the 186a closure, is the best (and possibly only) option for regenerating these incredibly important shell banks. If you have an interest in this area please support the efforts of Patuharakeke by supporting their application. Below is the link to the application and how to make a submission. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/consultations/proposed-further-temporary-closure-at-mair-bank-and-marsden-bank-marsden-point-whangarei-to-the-harvest-of-all-shellfish-2024

Shocked to pick up this amount of plastic rubbish from Matapouri Beach this morning - in a very small area and in a very short time... There's heaps more out there above the tide line if anyone feels like doing their bit for ocean health.

On Friday I went out to check on our second batch of kelplings. We planted these guys out on the reef at Phillip Island in May, and they are doing really well. We've had a fantastic survival rate with this batch and some of them are already approaching adult size.

Our third batch of kelpings, "planted" out six weeks ago, are doing really well. After doing a site preparation and kina removal session our team of volunteers carefully placed each of the 250 green gravel pebbles in nooks and crannies on the rocky reef substrate of Phillip Island in Tutukaka Harbour. This time around we decided to place the green gravel in small groups close together, rather than spreading them out over a larger area....

Regenerating the kelp forests of Tutukaka Harbour: A Community-based Collaborative Regeneration and Reseach Project Update 13-12-2022 First kelplings “planted” at Philip Island We had a great turnout on the morning of Sunday 11th Dec for the first of our kelp regeneration “plant outs”. Of course, we don’t actually plant the kelp in the sand, but instead we are carefully placing the “Green Gravel” in nooks and crannies on the reef....

Restoring the kelp forests of Tutukaka Harbour.
A Community-based, Collaborative Regeneration and Research Project
We are excited to announce the launch of the Tutukaka Harbour Kelp regeneration project. The aim of this project is to support the kaitiakitanga of mana whenua/mana moana in restoring the mauri of the harbour by “re-seeding” denuded areas of the harbour that were once flourishing and vibrant kelp forests. An important goal of this collaborative project is the setting up of a community-based marine laboratory/education facility in Church Bay for the propagation of the kelp seedlings and other marine-focused regenerative activities.

The project is being overseen by a hau kāinga steering group who are directly involved in the entire process including, initial ecological assessments, site selection, kelp propagation, deployment and ongoing monitoring. The lead organization for the project is Te Wairua o te Moananui – Ocean Spirit Charitable Trust and the project is supported by researchers from Massey University’s School of Natural & Computational Sciences, who are providing expert knowledge and support in the propagation, deployment and monitoring of the kelp.
We will be holding a public presentation about this exciting project on the 11th December at 7pm, upstairs at the Marina office in Tutukaka, all welcome. Weather permitting, the first batch of “kelplings” will be placed at selected sites on the 12th December around Philip Island.
This project is an approved, permitted activity, authorised by the NRC Harbour Master.

Planet Local - a film night
Date: Thursday 20th October
Where: May Bain Room, Whangārei Library
Start time: arrive 5.30pm for a 6pm SCREENING
This 50min film gives voice to a growing number of people around the globe, who are building a more beautiful world at a local level: featuring grassroots activists from around the world alongside internationally known figures like Russell Brand, Noam Chomsky, Vandana Shiva, Naomi Klein, Jane Goodall, Gabor Maté and Helena Norberg-Hodge.
Their wisdom and inspiration bring a refreshing clarity to the confusion currently dominating our topsy-turvey world.
The film shows innovating ways of supporting local businesses, growing local food, sharing traditional knowledge, opposing free trade treaties and challenging the crude, deceptive mainstream media narrative of ‘bigger is better’.
It highlights countless initiatives that are already underway to protect and restore human-scale local economies, communities and the natural world.
Its overridingly positive message shows how human beings don’t need to be the problem – We can be the solution.
Presented by Whangarei Timebank. Afterwards there'll be an opportunity to discuss what’s already happening locally and what more can we do to build a stronger, more connected community in our rohe.

The SeaBin is back in Action! Huanui College students, who have volunteered to sort the rubbish during Term 3, were able to see the bin going back into the water. Roger in the office has done an incredible job replacing the motor, prop-speeding the whole bin and giving it a thorough clean!
It's on B Pier and you're all welcome to visit it in action.
