Hey Zips!
For this Feature Friday, we want to take a look at some black activists that truly shaped America! Starting with Frederick Douglass, who was born into slavery and became a famous abolitionist writer who would become the first African-American to hold a high ranking US government position!
Next, Rosa Parks was a pivotal activist in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was widely known as “the First Lady of civil rights”.
Finally, the world renowned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was the most well known activist during the civil rights movement, and his “I have a dream” speech rocked the world. These are just some of the many activists who have changed the world.

Have a Good Friday, and Go Zips!

Hey Zips! For today's Feature Friday in Black history month, we are highlighting some extraordinary authors, artists and directors!
Maya Angelou was an American poet who wrote books like "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". Additionally, she earned an emmy nomination in 1977 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Roots".
Jacob Lawrence, an American painter, was famous for his abstract pieces which depict African-American life. The majority of his artwork was released in the 1940's, but ranged all the way till the 80's.
Finally, we want to highlight our own Zips alumnus Matthew A. Cherry, who just recently received an Oscar for his animated short film titled "Hair Love".
That's all for today Zips, make sure to tune in next Friday and to stay warm!

Known by all, an icon to many, and an inspiration to the world. Our first feature Friday for Black History Month is the recently passed Kobe and Gianna Bryant.
Kobe's time in the NBA was spent on the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to the retirement of his two numbers, 8 & 24 in 2016. With the Lakers, Kobe won 5 NBA championship rings, and played on 15 all star NBA teams, not to mention the countless awards he received and records he broke while playing for the team. Kobe inspired generations of kids all over the world, and was among the greatest NBA players of all time. Gianna, his 13 year old daughter had an undying love for basketball and had intentions on playing basketball at Yukon, her dream school.
The world lost a legendary NBA player, and a delightful prospect for the WNBA. You will be missed Kobe and Gianna Bryant.
