Immense gratitude to everyone who came out last night to our final Summer Series event. It has been a great honor to work collaboratively with the to bring our visions of blending art, history, and community to life. We look forward to continuing to be in community with you all and act upon our mission which is to empower and inspire collective community. ✨

The theme of the event last night was Better Together: Healing in Community and we were able to do just that. Local realtor / artist (.from.dennis) led us through a guided paint and sip art lesson where we all did our best to paint different animals coming to gather and replenish themselves at the same watering hole. Dennis chose this image because he felt that this image of different animals coming together as a community to replenish their souls by drinking from the same body of water embodied our theme of healing together in community.

Our farm workers continue to work tirelessly through a pandemic, fires, and natural disasters. Many farmworkers did not receive or qualify for stimulus checks and are unable to receive financial assistance. That’s where community comes in and organizations like Campesino Appreciation Caravan] help to fill the gaps.

Our second Summer Series event with the posed the question, what does ‘Reclaiming the Outdoors’ mean to you? When we first curated this theme we had intended for the Reclamation of the Outdoors to encompass spaces in nature. It wasn’t until seeing the Black Lives Matter mural defaced did we personally take the time to question that feeling of safety and reclamation on our very own streets and sidewalks.

We had the opportunity to hear from Yadira Flores from County Park Friends who shared her incredible story of turning a negative experience into something positive for the community through the form of rock painting and Oscar Corcoles, the founder of Fuerza Latinx, who gave us insight to the lack of physical outlets for children of color in our community and how it is detrimental it is to their health. We painted rocks to encourage Black and POC community members to be outdoors, take up space, and embrace one another and ended the event with an open mic for community members to voice their concerns about the defacing of the mural and what reclaiming the outdoors means to them.

We hope to see you on Thursday, August 29th for the third event of this collaborative series themed “Solidarity Not Charity”. Thank you to all of our collaborators, attendees, and storytellers that make these events so meaningful.

Our mission is to inspire and empower collective community here in Santa Cruz and beyond.
