Hello 2020 Parents!
A note about the Virtual Graduation Ceremonies this week:
Hello Highlander Families!
Although our traditional graduation and commencement events were cancelled due to our county's distancing restrictions, we were able to celebrate all seniors in a drive-through graduation event last week. Please see our social media accounts for pictures! Additionally, we will release a virtual graduation ceremony on Monday night. I hope families and friends can have screening events and celebrate their graduates together! Please note, I will be watching it for the first time along with you... but I have a sense the videographers did a great job.
Here is the information so that you can tune in:
High School virtual graduation celebrations will premier Monday night, June 15 at 7 p.m. on the district's YouTube page.
If for any reason during the Monday night premier our YouTube page falters, here is a back-up web location for Monday night’s viewing (these locations will not be available after Monday night; though the videos will remain on the district YouTube page):
Hazen High: https://vimeo.com/427726624/34b0fc6e82
Lindbergh High: https://vimeo.com/428380833/0da2cc71bc
Renton High: https://vimeo.com/428201366/1f5a1dc563
Talley High: https://vimeo.com/426458497/f93e37b4ff
Additionally, the City of Renton Channel 21 will air the virtual gradation celebrations. Each school’s video will air twice next week at these dates/times:
Hazen High School: Tuesday 6/16 and Thursday 6/18 at 12 p.m.
Lindbergh High School: Tuesday 6/16 and Thursday 6/18 at 4 p.m.
Renton High School: Wednesday 6/17 and Friday 6/19 at 11 a.m.
Talley High School: Wednesday 6/17 and Friday 6/19 at 5 p.m.
Thank you!

Class of 2020 Parents, I generally try to be optimistic, but I just don't have the words to express how very sad this announcement has made me.
Below is what has been received from the district. More details should be coming from Principal O'Brien soon.
Also, I am going to create a Zoom meeting next week for parents so that we can coordinate a way to celebrate our kiddos!
From the District:
Today, Governor Jay Inslee announced that he does not believe that all counties, including King County, will move to Phase II of the state’s Safe Start recovery plan by June 1, and will remain in Phase I as several important areas—disease activity, testing, and healthcare system status—have yet to meet guidelines laid out in the plan.
The announcement means King County, along with others, cannot safely reopen businesses and resume travel, shopping, recreation, and gatherings (some restrictions were lifted for houses of worship). The decision also impacts our plans for celebrating the Class of 2020.
Earlier this month, we created two plans for graduation celebrations for the Class of 2020. As Phase I does not allow any in person activity (including the graduation walk we planned in Option 1) we will move to Option 2 and create a virtual graduation by videotaping parts of the ceremony and including a slideshow of graduating seniors (senior photos will be used in this slideshow). This virtual graduation ceremony will premiere on the district’s YouTube page on Monday, June 15.
Additionally, high schools are planning a graduation event between June 1-5 that will provide students who have met graduation requirements an opportunity to pick-up their diploma cover, while in cap and gown, in a vehicle procession in each school’s parking lot. Graduating seniors and families are being provided details of this plan by their high school principal.
23/05/2020
Hard to believe this incredibly odd school year is nearly over and for the Class of 2020, time to move on to their next phase in life.
I wanted to share with you all part of Principal O'Brien's email today recognizing some outstanding seniors!
Hello Highlander Families,
I hope this email finds you well.
This week we honor students who exemplify the Hazen ideals of Pride, Unity, and Achievement in the classroom with our annual PUA awards. Each department has nominated one student for each of the three awards. The Pride award is presented to students who showed the most personal growth within a given department. The Unity award is presented to students who best supported, inspired, or united their classmates. The Achievement award is presented to students who best exemplify excellence in the classroom.
Each day this week on Hazen’s Instagram, we will share PUA award winners from two or three departments. Help us congratulate these fantastic Highlanders!

Hello Seniors Parents! As you all know by now, we will not be having the usual Graduation Celebrations, however, we are working on trying to make some special accommodations both through the District and possibly something else. Details on the "something else" hopefully will be soon as we need to adhere to the Governor's phased reopening to work with the city.
In case you had not seen the email from the district on the two options for graduation, I have included the email here.
Students and families of the Class of 2020, thank you for your persistence and patience as we work to finalize plans to recognize your accomplishments and graduation this June. Superintendent Damien Pattenaude, high school principals, and district staff heard a loud and clear message from seniors and families that your desire is to have a graduation ceremony as close as possible to what traditionally happens each year. While we wish we would have the opportunity to hold this year’s graduations at the ShoWare Center in Kent, we are unable to do so due to the pandemic. However, we have worked hard to develop plans that get the closest to the wishes of our seniors while adhering to the new requirements for graduations that were released by the Washington State Department of Health on May 14 (read here).
Our plans include two options for a graduation “ceremony”--Option #1 (preferred) and Option #2 (only if Option #1 is not viable).
Option #1: Senior Graduation Walk, June 1-4, 2020
Seniors who are on track to meet all graduation requirements will be invited to participate in a Senior Graduation Walk to honor candidates for graduation and provide an opportunity to walk and receive their diploma cover while wearing their cap and gown. This walk will be recorded by professional videographers and professional photos will be taken of each graduate (as in previous graduation ceremonies these photos will be available for purchase). The video of the graduation walk, as well as student and staff speeches, will be used to create a virtual graduation ceremony that will premiere on the Renton School District YouTube page on Monday, June 15th.
It is important to note that this in person “walk” option is possible only if Washington State is in “Phase 2” of reopening.
The Graduation Walk will take place at the IKEA Performing Arts Center located on the Renton High School Campus, 400 South 2nd Street, Renton. In order to ensure we are able to follow social distancing guidelines, graduates will be assigned a specific time by their school on the following dates:
June 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Renton High School
June 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Lindbergh High School
June 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, Hazen High School
June 4, 8 to 10 a.m, Hazen High School
June 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, Talley High School
If a student is unable to participate in the Graduation Walk with their high school, their yearbook photo will be used as a part of the virtual graduation ceremony.
Procedures
On the day and time of the assigned Graduation Walk, Seniors will arrive in their cap and gown and adhere to the graduation dress code. Students must arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to the assigned time.
Vehicles will enter the parking lot on South 2nd Street and exit in the back of the lot onto Logan Ave South.
Vehicles will park in the lot and graduates will walk around to the front entrance on South 2nd Street to check in. No one else is allowed out of the vehicle or in the venue.
Seniors must wear a mask to enter the venue. They may remove it immediately before “walking." No purses, backpacks or personal items may be brought in.
Students will wait in line (spaced out 6 or more feet) until it is time to walk across the stage.
No convening on campus will be allowed. Students must leave immediately after exiting.
Next Steps
We are going to operate as if Option #1 will happen. Therefore, schools will assign time slots to graduates and provide information regarding logistics.
Option #2: Virtual Graduation
If Washington State is still in “Phase 1”, the Governor’s Office and the Department of Health will not allow us to do any in person activity.
If we are not allowed to bring our Seniors into the IKEA Performing Arts Center to walk across the stage, we will still individually tape the speakers for graduation (students, principal, School Board, etc.) and create a virtual graduation. This taping will take place the week of June 1 and a professional videographer will compile the segments along with a slideshow of seniors (students’ yearbook photos will be used). This virtual graduation ceremony will premiere on the district’s YouTube page on Monday, June 15. We are exploring options of how graduates might be able to receive their diploma covers, color cords, and awards in a celebratory manner.
We will also explore options to allow this year’s graduates to participate in next school year’s (2020-2021) graduation ceremony.
If you have any questions about your school's graduation plans, please contact your principal.

ATTN: Senior Parents! Tomorrow is pick up day for caps and gowns:
24/04/2020
CAPS AND GOWNS!!
2020 Parents and Students, while there is still so much to sort out for our Graduating Seniors, we now have a date and time to pick up Caps and Gowns.
Tuesday May 5th from 1pm-4pm.
This will be done as a DRIVE THRU in front of the school. Please plan to stay in your car! However, we are looking for 3 or 4 volunteers to help out with distribution…gloves and masks are highly recommended.
Message me here if you would like to help and don't forget, if you ordered from the plant sale, that pick up is next week.
We still don't know about Graduation, etc. but I am staying in touch with the school about whatever the plan might be.
Stay safe and healthy!

Class of 2020 Parents:
Since so much is still up in the air about graduation, I wanted to share an idea from a friend of mine in Ohio.
Ohio schools, like ours are closed for the remainder of the year, their seniors would have been graduating in a few weeks. The start earlier in August and don't have mid-winter break. Anyway, parents are decorating the front windows (or some part of the front of their homes) in school colors and congratulating their seniors. I thought it might be nice to do the same for our Hazen Class of 2020.
Since our Seniors don't graduate until June 15, this gives us a month to plan and coordinate a date.
Thoughts?
I think it would be a nice way to celebrate our kids and all they've been through this year.
Thanks!
Right after I posted this, I saw on the resource page that one of our parents has already created a sign you can purchase for your yard.
Here is the link:

Greetings Class of 2020 Parents.
My heart is so heavy right now and I struggled with posting this yesterday as I tried to wrap my head around it all, but as you know Gov. Inslee has ordered all Washington Schools closed for the remainder of this school year.
This week is Spring Break and Trimester 3 begins on April 13.
There are so many questions, probably more questions than answers at this point. And like so many of you, I am grieving for our Seniors. The Class of 2020 has had a pretty difficult year and to end it this way is just heart breaking! So many benchmarks and celebrations and sporting events and just opportunities to be with their peers was unexpectedly cut short.
I will share with you that I cried yesterday and my son, a Senior, came down and hugged me and said, "it's okay mom, it kind of sucks, but now it's just time to finish up and look forward to college."
At this point, I don't know if there will be a Graduation Ceremony which of course means there will most likely not be a Grad Night, I am still working on what that all means. I have spoke to some of the Boosters and to some school staff and the hope is we can do something else special for our Seniors. I don't know what that will be, but I will keep posting and hope that when we get to the summer, we can get the parents together to plan something very special.
In the meantime, here is the email from the District, in case you have not seen it:
Governor Inslee announces schools closed for remainder of 2019-2020 school year
Today, Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced that schools across the state will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, the coronavirus. During this closure, all schools in our district will remain closed.
We acknowledge continued school closures present many challenges for students, staff, families, and the entire community. This is difficult news for all of us: students miss their friends and teachers, and we miss our students. While staff across our district are demonstrating their professional and personal commitment to our students in meaningful and inspiring ways, we understand that this extended closure also raises numerous questions for students and families. We have been working for the past several weeks to provide education in a different, sustainable model; and we will continue to work to provide answers to questions brought by this new directive. In the meantime, here is what we know now:
In-home learning will continue in the same format as long as schools are closed. School principals will continue to provide updated in-home learning content each Friday on school websites. More information can also be found on the district website. We are committed to continuing to partner with families and community to support our students’ learning while they are at home.
Elementary school families were recently sent information regarding the option to pick up a Chromebook at their student’s school between April 7-9. Our middle and high school students have school-issued Chromebooks to help with in-home learning. Families in need of this support, please contact your child’s principal.
High school seniors will receive support from guidance counselors regarding opportunities to earn and document credits they need for post-secondary transitions. We are working with the state’s college system to ensure smooth transitions.
We will continue to provide meals at these locations, Monday through Friday.
Childcare will continue to be available in a limited capacity for children of first responders and healthcare workers.
All field trips and events, including sports, socials, and dances, will be cancelled during the extended closure. Schools will engage with students to come up with creative alternatives to celebrate milestones such as prom. We will keep students and families updated on these decisions.
Based on the Governor’s comments during his press conference, we will continue to explore options related to graduation ceremonies. More information to follow.
We are awaiting information from the Governor on whether school facilities will be open to provide summer school.
Continue to keep one another safe & healthy
Please, stay home and stay healthy. Staying home and limiting person-to-person contact appears to be making a difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19, but those measures need to continue in order to be effective long-term. As much as possible, stay home, limit trips outside for groceries, gas and essentials, and stay 6 feet apart from people outside of your home. Additionally:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces.
Stay at home away from others if you are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
The need to close schools for the remainder of a school year is an unprecedented move, in unprecedented times. Our commitment is to continue to work to support our students and embrace the opportunity to stay connected with them to strengthen relationships and reinforce a sense of normalcy. While these are tough times, we will get through it together.

Hello Class of 2020 Parents. What to say? This has been a very challenging year for our Seniors and we still have no idea about the Graduation Ceremony or Grad Night.
At the moment, we have raised some money, sold some tickets for Grad Night, but we are still considerably short of our goal and we may not even have Grad Night. But, I am proceeding as though it will happen.
That being said, today is the last day for the Spring Plant Sale which is available online at the Booster site. And, sadly the Auction is being canceled. I am attaching the email here that includes an opportunity to still raise some money.
At some point, I feel confident that we will be able to do something for the Class of 2020, so if can donate, purchase a 50/50 raffle ticket, that would be amazing!
Thanks so much for all that you do and I hope you are all healthy and safe.
Hello Highlanders!
Sadly, we have had to cancel our auction for this year however, we have a corporate donor who has offered to match our raffle and donations 3:1 (to a max of $4K)! If you’d like to buy our $5 raffle tickets or donate any amount to the team, club of your choice or our general fund, please read the following:
· 50/50 Raffle – one lucky winner will take home 50% of our raffle earnings (prior to the match), typically around $1500! Who wouldn’t want that? We are accepting sales by cash/check through May 8th. The drawing will take place on Friday, May 15th and the winner will be notified by email or text. Tickets are an affordable $5 each and there is no limit on how many you can purchase. Please mail your check (preferred) or cash to Ann Green (address listed below). She in turn will mail you your raffle stubs. All must be post marked by May 8th, 2020.
· DONATE – you can designate any team/club or the general fund. Any amount is appreciated and must be postmarked by May 8th .
Our corporate match requires that all donations & raffle be paid by cash or check so unfortunately, no online option. You can include both donations and raffle into one check, made payable to HAZEN BOOSTER CLUB. Please include a note with how much for raffle & how much for donation & to which team/club/general fund. Please mail your payment to:

SAVE THE DATE - we have secured March 20, 2021 for next year’s auction.

Can you believe the holidays are here?! How about getting your senior registered for Grad Night as a Holiday Gift?!
In all seriousness, we need to boost registration!! Unfortunately the wreath and poinsettia fundraiser was not as high as in previous years and we only had a few volunteers at Husky games. Our Grad Night is booked and payments are being made! We only have a few other fundraising opportunities, so WE NEED SIGN UPS!
If you know a family of a senior who doesn't know about Grad Night or who is not on this page...please invite them to this page for more information!
I am going to set up another meeting to get more parents involved and drive sign ups. Put Wednesday January 8th on your calendar. Time and place tbd.
