Connecting a deck ledger to a cantilevered floor is not as simple as just bolting it together. The ledger generally transfers half the load of the entire deck through it's connection to the house, and that can end up a lot of weight. Unless you evaluate how the cantilevered joists are supported and designed, you can't evaluate whether they can carry the ledger. Learn all the nuances of deck ledger codes in the ICC and AIA approved 3-hr On-Demand Course, "Ledgers & Lateral Loads" available only at BuildingCodeCollege.com

Photos from Building Code College's post 28/02/2023

In the 1930’s to 1950’s the US Department of Commerce conducted research and developed guidance regarding building, plumbing, and other construction codes and practices. The purpose was to determine minimum recommended codes that protected the affordability of construction across the nation.

States and usually Local governments have jurisdiction over building codes and sometimes this has resulted in more restrictive codes than perhaps the people wanted. The Federal government has never been able to enact building codes for other than federal property and DC, but they have always played a role in supporting, promoting and funding building codes

Here is a new piece in my vintage library. A 1947 edition of the US government’s Building Code for New Dwelling Construction.

I teach in a lot of different ways so I can reach a lot of different people.

My son and I made this video together last year, and I think it’s pretty one-of-a-kind

Longer, original version is on YouTube, but I edited it down for the 3 min TikTok limit

Sorry it's turned. It was edited TikTok and phones.

I teach . Failed inspections not included.

When I teach I don’t just do “story time with Glenn”. Everyone can read the code for themselves.

Rather, I teach the code. The why, the when, the how, and the difficulty of a “to the letter” application under various nuances.

I don’t sugarcoat it’s flaws or sell it as perfect. I teach the truths, ugly and beautiful.

Let me show you so much that you’ve never before learned. Let me unteach what you have come to believe about code.

Watch the first session video of every On-Demand Course at BuildingCodeCollege.com by simply clicking the thumbnail.

08/12/2021

Those who believe are only out to get them are the same ones that don’t get the code.

Let me teach them to you through a different lens than government authority. Let me teach you proactively with no failed inspections included.

I hope you enjoy this century long journey of maximum stair height between landings.

Take my On-Demand Course, IRC Chapter 3, Means of Egress to learn all the modern stairway and egress codes!

No cantilevered joists? Well you're deck beam may be sized for it anyway. beams sized under the 2015 and 2018 IRC are always sized for a full joist cantilever loading the beam.

That's not really minimum code anymore, but good thing the 2021 IRC has the best so far and fixes this issue.

Learn all about how to provide the most appropriate prescriptive deck beam design under the 2021 IRC in my Live Webinar Dec 7th. Two presentation times to choose from - $23 - 90 minutes - ICC, AIA, and NADRA approved education.

Behind the Scenes of Sizing Beams will show builders and authorities the most effective way to serve our fellow Americans with everything "The Code" has to offer!

We love the codes, but we know they are far from perfect. To teach them honestly, we must reveal their shortcomings. The IRC has come a long way with deck codes, but lateral loads are still a mystery that has not been solved.

The lateral load anchor provisions in the IRC are smoke in mirrors. They lend you to believe lateral design is done. No... no it’s not.

approved education.

12/10/2021

Putting a few lateral load anchors through the ledger is like putting hold downs at the ends of braced walls and never asking about the wall bracing. Be sure to attend Glenn G. A. Mathewson 90-min Live Webinar this Thursday, "Deck Codes and Lateral Loads". Two presentation times are meant to make it easier for contractors and tradespeople to attend in the late afternoon/evening.

There’s a lot more magic to how I get this job done, but this was just an impromptu video while I waited for a new recording to process.

I’m proud to be a hardworking, frugal, and creative micro-business owner. I don’t feel any need to fake glamour or carry shame in how I get my job done, and I want to help others feel that same way in their work.

Whatever your means to your ends... just be sure your ends are something you are proud of creating.

PS. I’m working on my newest and most awesome Live Webinar, “IRC Chapter Three”, that I’m scheduling for the first week in Nov. Registration will be up tomorrow. I’m also working on creating it into the next On-Demand course. It will take between 13 and 15 hours of education to cover all the code in chapter 3. It’s really the most important chapter of the IRC.

Announcements coming soon.
