We encourage you to take the time this upcoming Monday, MLK Day of Service, to volunteer in our own communities!

The last post for today, another "Where are they now" Wednesday post! Graduate Annelise Ware was kind enough to talk to us about how her life is currently!
1) What are you doing now with your public health degree?
I currently work for a company called, First Eye Associates. It's a doctor's office staffed by Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, and certified ophthalmic technicians/assistants. First Eye Associates caters to patients who come in for eye associated problems only, especially for referrals for cataract surgery, severe eye injuries, or issues their primary physician cannot diagnose. It does not necessarily pertain to my degree in regards to what I wanted to do, I thought I would be in a nonprofit setting. However, it definitely helped me get my foot in the door, and I am currently on the path to working toward my certification as a technician. I feel that becoming certified as an ophthalmic technician will open more doors for me. One day, I can work with undeserved children and help screen school aged children that need glasses that do not have the financial means or accessibility to see a doctor.
2) What is a word of advice you want to give both current and future public health students?
I would say network with as many companies as possible and take your internship SERIOUSLY! I would say put your best foot forward, always show up on time, ask questions, and get involved in projects outside of your internship. I'll say it twice, MAKE YOURSELF STAND OUT! Dress up! Be outgoing, and get to know your company and its employees. Also, become friends with your professors, you will get great recommendation letters that way, and you will stand out to the faculty. Please make sure you are seen as an individual and not a number.I feel one of my greatest accomplishments was becoming a mom, and obtaining the knowledge I gained in my degree to properly vaccinate my baby, utilizing any resources I need to ensure the health of my baby is above adequate, and the benefits of breast feeding thanks to my Women's Health class taught by Dr. Dinkel.

As we continue into the afternoon, we have another "Where are they now" Wednesday post! Graduate Jennifer Alquicira discusses what she has been up to as of recent.
1) What are you doing now with your public health degree?
I’m now working three jobs that entails a little of what I plan do with my degree. I work at UNMC on a diabetes research study, work for YMCA as a wellness coach, and with OPS as a substitute paraprofessional. I’m also getting my certificate for community health workers and my masters in health behavior at UNO, but hopefully I will be accepted to UNMC for their master’s program in health promotion.
2) What is a word of advice you want to give both current and future public health students?
To take your time learning about new concepts that may or may not happen during your field of work. You never know what new opportunities may come up to give you an understanding of trying something out of your box.

It's "Where are they now?" Wednesday! Recent graduate, Jocelyn Linares, shares a bit about what she's been doing since receiving her Bachelor's in Public Health from UNO, and gives a bit of advice to future students:
1. What are you doing now with your public health degree?
I am in a graduate program in Los Angeles, CA. I'm pursuing my doctorate in Occupational Therapy.
2. What is a word of advice you want to give both current and future public health students?
Learn how to do APA right if you have any desire to pursue a graduate degree. Especially, if you’re pursuing a degree in the health/medical field. Don’t cut yourself short, challenge yourself when doing assignments. Use your professors as a guide and tool to help you grow as a student, ask a lot of questions, and don’t be afraid to make appointments with your professors. The sooner you develop that relationship the better. Figure out what kind of learner you are and find new strategies for each class, ask your classmates. VOLUNTEER!!! I got so many jobs just from volunteering.
