Hello, we are the Undocumented People’s Alliance Bloomington, or Undocu-Alliance for short, and we want to formally reintroduce ourselves.
We were formerly known as Undocuhoosiers Bloomington but we have recently gone through a name change as a result of Indiana University’s trademark on the word “Hoosiers.” We are taking this name change as an opportunity to reorganize ourselves and reinvigorate and strengthen our work in Bloomington and the wider Indiana area. In reintroducing ourselves we would like to take this opportunity to state that we value to protection of the human rights of undocumented people and Dreamers. Our mission as an organization is to assist undocumented community members in any way we can from providing financial support to students and families in need as well as advocating on behalf of those who cannot always stand up for themselves through community organizing and advocacy. In light of recent events, we would also like to unequivocally state that we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and fight against injustice in every form. We are ready to get to work and will continue to support the Bloomington community in any way we can. If you or someone you know needs financial or other support or you are interested in getting involved with us, please feel free to reach out.

In solidarity,
UPA

Popp & Bullman, Attorneys-at-Law

I know that the new rule announced by the Trump Administration on Monday has created confusion and fear both in the immigrant community and among advocates. Here is some important information to know about the new rule: 1) It will not go into effect until October 15, 2019. 2) It only applies to applications filed after October 15, 2019. 3) There are many exceptions to the new rule, including asylees, refugees, U Visa holders, T VIsa holders, VAWA Self-petitioners, and most lawful permanent residents. Those who fit in these groups may still receive public benefits without risk; 4) Children under 21 and pregnant women are also exempted from the rules, and these individuals may receive public benefits if they otherwise qualify; 5) programs like free-lunch programs, Head Start, and emergency medicaid do not count for this rule; 6) public benefits received by family members, such as children in the household, will not be counted against applicants. Those individuals who receive public benefits now should consult with an immigration attorney before terminating the benefits to see whether they will even be affected by this rule. Also, we anticipate lawsuits to fight this new rule in court, and that could halt the rule from going into effect.

We say their names and honor their lives. Ni un minuto de silencio, toda una vida de lucha. Valeria y Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez presente. Arte y post by Manuela Guillén @lazy.beam 🙏🏽

Repost @lazy.beam via @puente.az
This illustration is to honor Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez, 25 and his daughter, Valeria 2.
.
The family from El Salvador were trying escape extreme poverty and seek asylum in the US but they were turned away. They tried to cross the Rio Grande and only the mother, Tania Vanessa Ávalos made it out alive. The family was surviving with $10 a day in El Salvador (the country still uses US dollar currency). Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez wanted to work in the US so he can raised money to build a home for his wife and daughter. My condolences to the family and the mother for their lost. 🌹
.
.
“From the scorching Sonoran Desert to the fast-moving Rio Grande, the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border has long been an at times deadly crossing between ports of entry. A total of 283 migrant deaths were recorded last year; the toll so far this year has not been released (CNN).” .
.
Currently the internet and news are circulating a photo of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and Valeria found dead by the Rio Grande. If you look up the story this image will come up.
.
If you choice to share this image of their death for shock factor or share your platform on immigration human rights. Please remember this was a family in search of a better life. Please be respectful and show compassion and empathy. This family like many others risk their lives sólo para buscar una vida mejor. #restinpower
