Having a little medical problem so please hang in there with me and I'll soon return to finish the Peters story and a new story on Garland history. Thanks for your patience.

18/06/2019

Peters Colony continued:
Peters Colony (also known as Peter's Colony) was formed as a result of a contract (which was authorized by the Texas Congress on January 4, 1841) between William S. Peters and his associates, a group of English and American men, and the President of Texas, Mirabeau Lamar. It began on August 30, 1841. The first contract set the boundries of the colony's lands along the Red River in north Texas, and included terms for the number of emmigrants required for the contract to be considered fulfilled.
The empresarios requested additional lands, as they felt that there was not enough vacant public domain included in their original boundries. This led to the ex*****on of a second contract, November 9, 1841, which extended the borders of the colony in the exchange for increasing the required amount of settlers. The initial English investors did not provide enough funding for the venture, which led to the creation of the Texas Agricultural, Commercial and Manufacturing Company in Louisville, Kentucky on November 20,1841. This company sent the first group of settlers to Cross Timbers in December 1841 - to be coontinued.....

Peters Colony - How it got its name.

Peters Colony + Embree + Duck Creek = Garland!

From:
Texas Emigration and Land Company, Peters Colony Records - 1841-1859.
(This is a historical record - copied as the orginal).

Peters Colony (also "Perter's Colony") was formed as a result of a contract (which was authorized by the Texas Congress on January 4, 1841) between William S Peters and his associates, a group of English and American men, and the President of Texas, Mirabeau Lamar. It began on August 30, 1841. Three other contracts modifying the original would be signed followed by numerous legal battles, some remedied through the Texas Legislature. In the end, the colony created little to no income for its investors. It did, however, bring 2,205 families to Texas, distributing to them 879,920 acres of land. the records relating to Peter's Colony on file with the GLO mostly concern the portions of land that were given to the Texas Emigration and Land Company (TELC) in early 1852. The bulk consists of field notes and affidavits from surveyors attesting to various boundries of land within the Colony.

How wonderfully symbolic is the Tinsley/Lyles of our historic farming past and our great pioneering families. Would you treck 1100 miles in a covered wagon with your family to start a fresh and new way of living in a barrren area - new life beginnings - newly opened territory - tiny towns springing up - the faith of the future - our pioneers. Our history is great and full of stories to be shared. Garland is my happy place. How about you?

Off to the new year with a "Meet and Greet" experience in the planning for our Members. Despite the weather we had a good turnout on Saturday, Sept 22, It was so good to see friends, neighbors, contacts and advocates. The wonderful pioneer family of the Lyles were greeting guests as they entered and we sincerely appreciate their long drive to participate and assist us. Cecil Williams, guest speaker, sharing his pioneering family story was delightful and informative. Josh Medlock shared the First Methodist story rich in history and detail. We always seem to have organized and built what we valued most our homes and houses of worship as priority. MS Senior Garland America Telva Gale Wallace sang an Irish ballad from the 1840s, beautifully done in that historic time period costume. Archiitect Ron Hobbs gave us an update on historic projects around Garland that included the Granger Center among others. Thanks to all the hard workers that made this an eventful program and our bakers who tried 1840s period recipes of ginger muffins made by our treasurer Barbara, and not only can MS Sr. Garland sing, she makes great peach muffins as well. Chef Dale Granger prepared the melt in your mouth sugar cookies our ancestors would have been proud. Pictures will tell you the rest of the story - enjoy.

12/09/2018

Can you just imagine lite refreshments from my great aunt Susie's "Home Queen Cook Book"? Did I say dated 1898?
Wonder what she would have thought of us reaching back in time to celebrate our Garland history and Preservation Garland's 5th year Anniversary. Do expect to see the Board and staff in period dress, well as close as we can make it, in portraying our farming community heritage. This month is quickly slipping away so don't forget the 22nd at First United Methodist Church, Schreiber Hall, corner of Avenue B and Glenbrook, 2-4 p.m. Please let us know you are coming for chair setup and refreshments. The Tinsley/Lyles House

This is the 1870s historic farm house structure that was the beginning of Preservation Garland Inc in August of 2013. The City of Garland had planned to demolish this historic place along with the Queen Anne Pace house. Mr. Jerry Flook of Garland’s pioneering Flook family gathered interested and concerned citizens to prevent the demolition of the two historic structures. The Tinsley/Lyles now sits at Heritage Crossing, 399 N Seventh Street and the Pace now sits on Eleventh Street with a historical marker at its location.

Our Purpose

Preservation Garland, Incorporated was organized exclusively for the charitable and educational purposes to identify and document historic sites, structures, and districts in and about the City of Garland, Texas and to engage in activities which will preserve these sites, structures and districts.
