We have now been home for a week and I think everyone is recovered from the full and busy week in Uruguay. We can't thank the producers and companies in Uruguay enough for their willingness to open their doors to a group of UGA students every year! The opportunities, perspectives, and experiences they give our students have an impact long after they leave UGA. We must also thank INIA and Bruno Lanfranco for making this learning experience possible every year! We will hopefully see everyone again next March, if not sooner.

Saturday the group had a free day in beautiful Punta del Esta so no pictures. Now to return to UGA after a great week with our friends and colleagues in Uruguay. We can’t express our gratitude enough to the businesses, ranchers, farmers, producers, and INIA for opening their doors with welcoming arms to UGA students year after year! We will see you soon.

Friday we had the pleasure of again visiting Mrs. Paula at Alto de la Ballena, a boutique winery in the hills of Maldonado to learn about the growing Uruguayan wine industry. We then had lunch with Dr. Mauricio Rodriguez, who was involved with starting this trip several years ago. The group was able to talk with Mauricio and learn about how he manages Hereford and Angus herds and an excellent overview of cattle production in Uruguay. Wednesday was a great day with two stops at family ranches that have hosted our group many times. We can’t express our gratitude enough to these families.
We started the day at El Paraíso (Sra. Julia Ortiz) with Jose Gayo, Rodrigo, and Josefina. El Paraíso specializes in beef, rice, and soybeans. The class also got a special treat by riding Jose’s prized Criollo horses, a breed native to the Pampas region.
We ended the day at Los Tilos Angus (Sra. Ingrid Ahlid) with Ana Maria, Federico, Gaston. While at Los Tilos the family and Jose Ignacio walked the group through several exercises evaluating forage production systems and breeding cows. We finished the evening with refreshments and dinner with the family at their house.
