Lake Inquiry 2024: Why is the Lake Important to our Community? 23/05/2024

This may be my favorite community partnership all year. Students are not only learning about how communities are shaped around natural resources, they are learning how THEIR community is shaped by a natural resource in an inquiry based way. They learned how to develop good questions, that they then asked local "lake" experts in their community and recorded their information to then be used to create an informational poster on their topic. Learning doesn't get more authentic and meaningful than that!

Lots of great connections and partnerships were made at the SLS joint conference at Putnam Westchester BOCES. I had so much fun inspiring and being inspired by librarians from 4 different BOCES.

This summer I created a partnership with our local ice cream shops and recreational facilities to build our summer reading program, "Scoops, Sneakers, & Stories." I also partnered with our PE teacher to help develop this unique reading experience. 🍦🏃‍♀️📚
How did it work?
Before school let out students came to the library and picked out a book to read, then each week of the summer we took a different grade level on a trip to a local ice scream shop where they would enjoy a complimentary ice cream while writing a 1-2- or- 3 Scoop review. After devouring our ice cream, we would participate in a fun recreational activity led by our PE teacher. We utilized our local nature trails, our community frisbee golf course (we borrowed discs from our local library), our recreational fields, our beloved miniature golf course, and our community playgrounds.
These partnerships within our community kept our students motivated to read, engaged in conversations with their peers about books, and excited about reading.

NYS librarians grew some amazing ideas for partnerships at the NYLA_SSL Conference. Together we are better!

I'm so excited to get these letters in the mail today. They hold the promise for powerful "literacy partnerships." Ice Cream shops and reading all summer long... what could be more engaging and motivating than that?

Community Partnerships can lead to extended learning opportunities for your students! Our strong partnership with our wonderful community partners at Northshire Bookstore Saratoga led to a free opportunity for our students to meet virtually with Nick Bruel. Our students laughed, engaged and deepened their love of literature through this incredible opportunity.

Feel free to share any community partnerships you have had that have led to extended learning opportunities for your students/teachers.
