Long time no see! I've been really lazy with this page, sorry!

Here's an interesting article on the importance of learning how to read:

Why Johnny Still Can't Read -- And What To Do About It For decades, there’s been an overwhelming scientific consensus on the best way to teach kids to read. But millions of kids still don’t get the kind of instruction that works.

Quit my Saturday job at ABC Pathways recently. It's sad to leave my students after teaching them for so long. :( This is one letter that I'll keep forever, as instructed. I'll keep it even if little Katie has forgotten about the teacher named James.

How safe is TikTok app? | Internet Matters 14/11/2018

Does your child use Tik Tok? If so, you might want to read this article.

I've checked out the app to see what the fuss is about. It's definitely juvenile, with the occasional slightly-inappropriate-for-kids content popping up. Users also choose their own songs to dance (or try to dance) to, and let's just say Khia wasn't just rapping about her sore neck and back in her song.

Had the last lesson with one of my very capable students and she passed me these. 😢 It's been a pleasure!

The parent's handwriting is beautiful by the way, and now I really want a 3D printer.

How To Encourage Good Reading Habits In Kids | Oxford Learning 26/09/2018

Recently a parent asked me how to make reading more engaging for her child. I sent her the linked article, as well as my own experience. See if it helps!

"You should definitely make reading a fun activity and not a chore. Let your children choose the things they want to read. For example when I was a child I didn't have a lot of interests in fiction, but I read a lot of science and how-to books. Let them choose the reading materials they are interested in.

Also don't restrict reading to purely books. I'm not advocating playing a lot of video games, but as a kid I read a lot playing story-based games. English is everywhere; children can be reading comics, brochures, (good) song lyrics, etc.

And also, set an example and read more in front of them. Let them know reading is something normal that people do every day, and not 'work'."

'They might want a Caucasian': Outrage as Asian rejected from native English tutor job | Hong Kong Free Press HKFP 28/05/2017

The thread on the Hong Kong NET Teachers facebook group got noticed (well I think both the fb group and HKFP are run by the same guy Tom, but still). How do you feel about this?

For me I'm just thankful that all the parents I've encountered are open-minded and have a good taste in teachers. Hahaha.
