And we’re back! Fall 2024 BBQ happened and in a dramatic turn of events sure to rock the sporting world on a global scale, two-time Trombolympic Champion junior Trent Brumback was usurped by upstart freshman competitor Alex Foster after Alex’s dazzling artistic display in the Left-Handed A Major Scale competition in the final round. We didn’t capture the whole studio in the photo but a good time was indeed had by all.

I am so proud of these seven trombone studio graduates from Ball State. Stu (performance), Connor, Andrew, Bradley, Ethan (music education), Robin (composition and music media production), and José (MM performance). The seniors began college at the height of COVID in 2021 and went on to essentially lay the groundwork for some of the most important culture elements in the studio since I began seven years ago. They’re all accomplished players, teachers, and above all solid human beings. I will greatly miss them, and all of us here at know they are off to wonderful things in the music business. Bravo cats! VORWÄRTS!!

We had a great end-of-year taco feast! We were even joined by studio alums Aidan, Dillon, and Caroline! For those curious, we had steak, chorizo, and chicken. It was *sabroso* 🌮🌮🌮

Huge congratulations to MM student José Román on accepting a fellowship and assistantship to the University of Minnesota to begin his doctoral studies! Having joined us from Costa Rica, José has been our TA for two years. We are very excited for him to continue his studies with Prof. Tom Ashworth at this very fine research institution. We will miss you greatly! Felicitaciones Maestro Román! Pura Vida!

Huge congratulations to senior performance major Stuart MacKenzie on a fantastic offer and final decision to pursue a master’s degree in performance with David Jackson at the University of Michigan this coming fall!

Stu has been, we all agree here, the heart of the studio for four years. His hard work, dedication, professionalism, and positive vibe will serve him very well in Ann Arbor and beyond 🙌

Next this week we celebrate junior and sophomore for their first-ever solo recital voyages! Jacob played music by Barbara York and Adrienne Albert, and Solomon played music by Sulek and Bach. Bravo to you both!

Holy cats it’s been a busy week! First post: we enjoyed a truly inspiring recital and subsequent master class from His recital was half small bore and half large bore but all classical music. It was so cool to hear the variety of color and nuance he gets, plus we got to join in on his piece “Refulgence” for solo trombone plus octet.

Coming up next week! is a lights out player and teacher and we are excited to host him. Plus the Cardinal Trombone Choir Octet gets to join him on his recital playing his original composition “Refulgence” which is a straight banger if we do say so ourselves 🔥🔥🔥

Big congrats to MM student José Román on his recent degree recital and on passing his Masters Oral Exam today! José has joined us from Costa Rica these two years. His recital featured three world premieres of music by Costa Rican composers, which was a very cool thing to enjoy. José intends to continue commissioning Costa Rican composers to write more solo music for trombone, which we will all look forward to enjoying!

Today was day one of peer teaching in studio class. Over the course of the coming weeks, everyone in the studio will have an opportunity to teach in public and hear feedback from their colleagues in the studio. It’s always one of our favorite things to do in class!

Hey y’all! We enjoyed performing service music and then a concert at the beautiful 2nd Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis today. What a way to kick off spring break 2024. We’ve got a great second half of the semester ahead—stick around!
