The Shark Institute is a nonprofit organization that supports research, advances policy, and educates the public on sharks with the best, available science
Sharks are a group of fishes characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, 5 to 7 gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Want to hear some other cool facts? The first sharks appeared in the ocean around 450 million years ago! They are some of the largest fish in the ocean, and even have a sixth sense! A not so cool fact, is that an estimated 100 million
sharks each year are killed by man. They are largely killed simply for their fins to make fin soup and the continued genocide of these impressive creatures could inalterably affect the top of the marine food web. The Shark Institute will continue with field research led by Doctoral Candidate Bryan Keller, who will be investigating the impact of offshore wind farms on the migration of coastal sharks. Research Professor Tom Mullikin and Master Naturalist Thomas Mullikin, Jr will also be continuing their field research, development of topical policy analysis and will continue to capture their shark dives for education purposes from across the globe! The Shark Institute Facebook will be sharing on-going research, as well as educational and experiential activities in an effort to engage the public in good science.
