Sunflower Community Action

Job Description: Communications Coordinator
Program Area: Communications
Reports to: Executive Director

At Sunflower Community Action, Community Organizing is about building a powerful community one person at a time. It is about motivating, challenging and training individuals to take action.
We mobilize diverse communities around five main issues areas:

1. Economic justice for workers by stopping wage theft
2. Equal access to economic opportunities by organizing marginalized
students to challenge barriers within the educational system.
3. We challenge racist agendas by organizing the community to
understand and embrace immigrants and by organizing immigrants
to have a voice at the table on issues that threaten basic human
rights, such as the Arizona style laws.
4. We organize diverse citizens around their right to vote by conducting
civic education using popular education through house meetings in
the communities we serve. Through our KanVote campaign, we
organize to overturn the SAFE Act.
5. We organize individuals who have been victims of predatory lending
practices, to get out of that cycle through our Rescue Program and to
work with our legislators to establish tougher regulations on Pay
Day and Car Title lenders.

Job Summary:

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for strategic day-to-day online communication efforts including social networking, online message development, tracking web traffic, new media relations and outreach. In addition to building a larger constituency of online supporters who are actively engaged in Sunflower’s work, the Communications Coordinator will also focus on website management and maintenance, as well as the production of the Sunflower’s reports and publications. This position is also responsible for coordinating an effective communications strategy to educate the public about Sunflower’s Work.
Job Responsibilities and Expectations:

Manage Online communications including social networks
Manage and maintain website
Production of online and paper newsletter
Work with staff to regularly update website on their campaign
Build and maintain media relations
Develop press releases and Op-Eds
Create organizational communications plan
Database Management

• Commitment to social justice and agreement with organizational mission and goals
• Excellent communication skills--verbal and written
• Excellent organizational skills-- good attention to detail and well organized
• Self-motivated—proven ability to work independently
• Innovative and Excellent interpersonal skills
