FPP Member of the Month Spotlight:
Necessities for Children

Necessities for Children (NFC) is a non-profit organization with a mission of providing support to disadvantaged children. NFC's Tech for Kids program engages youth, targeting youth in grade K-12 to achieve success in today's technology-driven world. We change the lives of low-income children by providing a uniquely compelling form of fun and interactive early-stage computer science education. We improve tech-ed access and education for students from all backgrounds with a focus on those who have traditionally been under-privileged

We are planning our 1st annual Rocket Launch program to LAUNCH World Space week, in early October and have seeking collaboration for partnerships with existing youth service providers. Our 8-week virtual Cyber Tech for Teens just wrapped up with YMCA of SE Florida and we are looking to repeat this program. The focus is education and job opportunities in this growing sector.

Sarah DeBoer-Hjort, President of Necessities for Children, shares her story with Junior Achievement of South Florida Career Bound youth; focusing on Entrepreneurship, Nonprofit Leadership & Leveraging LinkedIn. Inquisitive participants asked questions such as, "Where do you find your drive?" and "Did you ever go back to school for your degree?" Examples of notes that students had jotted during the class speak to the number of impactful things to remember. "You have to WANT to be successful. You don't have to meet the requirements. If you want it, you will seek (it)."

Cyber Safety Day in SE Florida 2021, Necessities For Children

08/12/2021

Cyber Safety Day in SE FL was a tremendous success today!! Over 2,000 youth received a lesson in Cyber Safety from Grade 3 teachers in Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach Counties with an Educator Kit sent to them by Center for Cyber Safety and Education.

Together with Necessities for Children Lorraine Brennan O'Neil Gordon O’Neil, Dawn Kristy, Susan Rakes and team, and all thanks to our many community partners, Commissioner Holness, sponsors Walmart Awareness Tech and many individual donors, youth received very relevant & applicable education.

Not only did 2 news crews film a lesson in action (if you’re in Palm Beach area, tune in shortly for the 5:00 news on WPEC-TV!), we also had Sherese James-Grow from Community Foundation of Broward see an incredible collaboration with Jack & Jill Center, the media school for today. What a great day!!! 🤗🥳

Apple’s Anti-Sexting Tool for iOS Will Warn Kids About Nudes—but Won’t Notify Parents 07/12/2021

Apple’s Anti-Sexting Tool for iOS Will Warn Kids About Nudes—but Won’t Notify Parents

The latest Apple will warn children but not notify parents. They are modifying their anti-sexting tool to protect child iPhone users in a feature that will notify underage users before they send or open a text message with nude photos however the tool will not also notify the child's parents about explicit images.

The new feature is expected to roll out this month in iOS 15.2 and is why leading Cyber Safety Day in SE FL and education to youth is important. It’s more critical that we arm our children with more awareness about these kinds of online threats so that they understand how to avoid danger and can tell an adult if they spot any warnings like these. Apple’s Anti-Sexting Tool for iOS Will Warn Kids About Nudes—but Won’t Notify Parents Apple added a new feature in the iOS 15.2 iPhone update to give kids a warning before they send or open nude photos—and made a difficult decision to omit a feature that would have warned their parents.

Necessities for Children & Center for Cyber Safety and Education, along with Jack & Jill Center are ready for Cyber Safety Day in SE FL tomorrow! Thank you to our partners, sponsors and the many individuals donors who are making this possible, including Walmart, Awareness Tech, South Florida Tech Hub, Lorraine Brennan O'Neil, Sarah DeBoer-Hjort, Jill Tallman, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Broward County Public Schools, The School District of Palm Beach County

This education is particularly poignant when you understand that 53 percent of children in the United States have a smartphone by the time they are 11 years old. Florida is ranked 3 out of 50 states for human trafficking. Moreover, according to the Center’s research, 40 percent of elementary age children connected with an online stranger. Of that 40 percent, 30 percent texted, and 11 percent met a stranger in their own home, at the stranger’s home or a park, mall or restaurant.

A Vision Becoming Reality

Tech education is foundational to build essential skills. It has a direct impact on one’s personal growth, economic welfare, and long-term well-being. We believe that educating children and youth are crucial to reducing poverty and increasing individual well-being.

• The Smithsonian reports that there will be 2.4 million unfilled STEM jobs by just the end of this year alone, so it is critical that kids today are equipped to succeed

• Code.org reports that only 35% of high schools teach computer science and yet the 21st century economy and job market — will revolve around science, technology, engineering and math. Coding and other STEM-type skills, for example, should be viewed as integral to a child’s development, much like sports, art, and music, as well as "the three Rs" of reading, writing and arithmetic.

• While there are plenty of free online coding classes, in-person programs aren’t as accessible: Many of the free and low-cost coding camps run by nonprofits tend to be reserved for girls and are often oversubscribed.
