📢 INFORMAMOS A LA COMUNIDAD LATINOAMERICANA EN University of Sussex - International SOBRE LOS ACONTECIMIENTOS EN PERÚ
Atte.
Los y las estudiantes peruanos en Sussex.

📢 Hello Latin America community and friends!
We would like to extend the invitation to the event titled 'Unpredictable Shifts in Maternal Mortality Prevention Policy Agendas, 1990 – 2010: Governance and Civil Society’s Participation in Peru'.
Ruth Iguiñiz-Romero, from the School of Public Health and Administration University Cayetano Heredia (Peru), will be talking about maternal mortality prevention policy in Peru.
Please, join the conversation on:
🗓Wednesday 22nd January 2020
🕐1-2:30PM
📍IDS Room 221
*Event description*
Maternal mortality prevention policy in Peru has shifted the focus of its interventions several times between 1990 and 2010. This seminar analyses these shifts and demonstrates that the policy was the result of particular interactions between the state, civil society actors and international actors in different political contexts over the two decades covered by the study. The study of these policy shifts is critical to identify the different state, civil society and international actors participating and influencing maternal health policy agenda setting, the different conceptual approaches to define maternal mortality as a policy problem and civil society organizations (CSOs) as policy actors (or policy entrepreneurs) in the agenda setting process, in different political regimes and contexts.
While transitions to democracy in most countries granted CSOs and officials in those states an opportunity to create participatory institutional structures and propose policy reforms on gender issues, the Peruvian case offers a unique scenario in which the participation of civil society organizations in those structures began in the context of an authoritarian regime. It demonstrates that institutional structures for participation in policy decision making are permeated by multiple governance frameworks – developmental governance, democratic governance and human rights governance – and adapt to different political regimes regardless of their original purposes and expected development. Finally, this study also reveals that democratic participation allows for diverse mechanisms and positions about controversial issues such as sexual and reproductive health policies that have not always advanced women´s rights.
Ruth Iguiñiz-Romero is an assistant professor of health policies at the School of Public Health and Administration University Cayetano Heredia in Peru, with over twelve years of experience conducting qualitative research. Her interests are in governance and citizenship, with a focus on the participation and empowerment of civil society organizations and vulnerable populations due to gender and ethnic inequalities. As a social scientist trained in anthropology, history and public policy, Ruth’s analysis of health systems and policies is informed by the intersection between historical, intercultural, public health, gender and human rights frameworks.

🗓 WHEN: Tuesday 19th November
📍WHERE: IDS 221
🕐TIME: 13.00 to 14.00
A bit more about the book 👇:
This is the story of the one question about global poverty we never thought to ask: who owns it? It’s a question with an unexpected answer, one that challenges everything that we thought we knew about what poverty is, and what we can do about it. This is a story of a powerful data-driven methodology being used in a dozen countries across 5 continents. It’s a new approach that puts poor families in charge of defining and diagnosing their own unique, multidimensional poverty—who by owning the problem, own the solution. This book is for all the governments, development NGOs, charities, dreamers, thinkers, doers and leaders who are frustrated with limiting their aspirations to reducing poverty, or alleviating its effects—and the lack of progress we face in doing either. This is a book about unleashing trapped energy within poor families to do the unthinkable: eliminate global poverty once and for all.
