A Teachers Life For Me !

I grew up in Handsworth Birmingham to Jamaican parents who came to England in the 1950’s. My mother, Minetta Morris worked as nurse, and before she passed in away in 1990 she held a variety senior management positions in the NHS.

My father, worked in the car factories of Birmingham, and similarly climbed the ranks of the industry and beyond. You may have heard of him? My father is Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth!Lord Morris was the first black leader of the Transport Workers Union and now sits in the house of lords.

I am incredibly proud of the achievements of my parents and the foundations they laid for the successful lives led by myself, my brother Garry, and our families. It is often said that ‘Parents are your first teachers’ and in this regard Garry and myself could not have had better. Although Minetta and Bill had little formal education, they ‘taught’ us by example of sheer hard work, respect for others, and self-discipline. I would not describe them as strict by the standards of the day, but there just seemed to be an expectation that we too must work as hard as possible and do our best. My brother and myself always had the feeling that we were in some way ‘special’ in a way I can’t really describe! From an early age, we knew we could be winners in life!

Garry & myself did well at school, but it was not easy for us or mum Minetta. Dad’s career progression to General secretary of the Transport union meant uprooting from schools and colleges around the country, and from a variety of good jobs for our mum. Despite this, Garry and myself went to University graduating in 1981, the first in our family to do so (myself in Electronics and Garry in History).
