Two of our teachers at the History Harvest Teaching Institute interviewing Khamisa Abdullah and Ommohal Koko, both Sudanese refugees to Lincoln and current U.S. citizens, about the ways they use quilting to engage other refugee women in our community about a range of issues, including political trauma, domestic violence, education, employment and empowerment. Deeply moving, powerful and inspiring people. The quilt behind them was created by various women from a number of countries who fled their homelands and have resettled in Lincoln.

History Harvest Co-Director, Dr. Patrick D. Jones, and Dr. Aaron Johnson, of the UNL School of Education, along with two great graduate students, Sarita Garcia and Grant Scribner, are conducting a Teaching Institute this week at the Nebraska History Museum for Lincoln Public Schools teachers and librarians in an effort to bring the concept from the university to the K-12 level.
Yesterday, participants were introduced to the HH and the core skills involved with this innovative, student-centered and community-based approach to historical education. Today, we conducted a mock History Harvest on the history of quilting in Nebraska. And, tomorrow, the teachers and librarians will begin to craft their own curricula based on the HH concept and tailored to their own classrooms and libraries at the 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th grade-levels.
This is a photo of some of our institute participants doing an oral history interview with Choctaw elder, Sue Bad Moccasin, about her quilting.
