Caught up with Brian Niese as he finished top-dressing his final field of wheat this spring with swine finishing manure. The wheat is about the V-6 to V-7 stage of growth. I will try to get back to this field next month to see what it looks like.
Jamie Otto applying manure as a spring nitrogen source to a wheat field this past week. Jamie has a Grassland Applicator toolbar on his tanker and incorporates the manure as he travels across the field. Guessing this is swine finishing manure at about 4,000 gallons per acre. He had semi-tankers running a loop for refilling the manure tanker using the suction arm.
Wietze and Syb Oenema applying dairy manure to wheat this week. This has been a good week for swine and dairy manure application to wheat. The rain this weekend will halt things but the weather looks favorable next week to begin again. Livestock manure can be used to replace commercial fertilizer when top-dressing wheat in the spring. This field will be harvested for wheat silage and then be planted to silage corn.
Brian Niese applying swine finishing manure as a top-dress nitrogen source to wheat earlier this week. The manure pit was almost empty so the manure it thicker and the flow is diminished. Brian is applying as the pig works through the drag hose. He has done several wheat fields and will probably do some more next week.

Jason Upell getting some dairy manure applied ahead of the spring planting season using rolling coulters. Applying manure on growing crops or as close to the start of the growing season as possible captures more of the manure nitrogen. This field has a alfalfa/grass hay stand.
Some livestock producers were able to get wheat top-dressed this week with liquid manure. This is unusual for mid-March but a nice opportunity to maximize use of the nitrogen in swine manure..

Ted Wiseman provided me this info from the federal website. It shows the number of poultry impacted by the high path avian influenza in Ohio since the start of 2025. It shows how devastating this has been on the birds, the families involved, and the companies that produce eggs and meat for all of us.
