CT needs an education ombudsman 18/03/2025

CT's list of literacy screeners contains a screener which experts - commissioned by - Connecticut State Department of Education - indicate Amira Learning does not meet key criteria!! The current list is in violation of state statute as screeners require evidence!! What's in your district??

CT needs an education ombudsman We have raised concerns about an AI driven computer reading screener that was added to the approved list without documented evidence of proper review.

Celebrate every win, no matter how small!
We sometimes feel so overwhelmed and struggle so much, that sometimes we forget to acknowledge all the things that we’re good at.
So remember, you can’t be great at everything, life isn’t like that, so find your passion and celebrate every win!

🐥This might ruffle some feathers, but I think it's a discussion we need to have.

📕Children who need intervention are those for whom the classroom curriculum is not enough. They need intense instruction to help close instructional gaps. This should be coming from the qualified individuals.

❗And that's where I am seeing an issue. Because there are so many kiddos who need intervention (a topic for another day), children are receiving intervention that may not ever close the gaps.

2️⃣I'm noticing two trends in reading intervention: children receiving a computer-based intervention and children receiving intervention from someone who does not have any training in reading best practices.

💻There are great computer programs out there. I'm a big fan of Lexia Core 5, just to name one. (My daughter is also absolutely obsessed with it. She's currently on the Scottish Cliffs, lol).

📕But no matter how good a computer program is, it is not a substitute for a human. It just isn't.

🧑‍🦱The other trend I'm noticing is that children are receiving intervention from someone who isn't qualified to provide the services. For example, simply giving a paraprofessional a couple activities to do is not the same as providing a quality intervention.

📕Parapros and other support staff are vital to our schools and provide such amazing services. But we cannot simply tell them to "go teach" and give them a few activities. Anyone who is providing intervention should be trained in best practices for that subject.

❌This is not an attack on any person who is trying to help children. This is a reminder that the school MUST properly train people who are going to work with our most vulnerable populations.

❓Who provides the intervention in your school? Tell me in the comments below.

IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH CT SPECIAL EDUCATION DISREGARD THIS POST! everyonefollowme

If you are NOT happy with special education in Connecticut than you should take a few minutes to let those who have the ability to make change know of your concerns!!! (link provided below)

We ask that you also consider WHO is looking out for you and your child? Does everyone have the ability to pay thousands of dollars for attorneys? How about a neutral Education Ombudsman to help!!! Ask for support of Senate Bill 873 in your public comments!!! https://www.cga.ct.gov/asp/cgabillstatus/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&which_year=2025&bill_num=873
