Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the founder of AHA Foundation, speaks to Detective Boughey about what honor violence is.

Find more information here: https://www.theahafoundation.org/honor-violence/

Honor violence is an often-overlooked form of abuse that shames, hurts, or kills thousands of women and girls in the U.S. each year and puts millions more at risk. Honor violence is typically seen in the form of physical or emotional abuse, sexual assault, r**e, or kidnapping - but it also includes female ge***al mutilation and forced marriage. In its most extreme cases, honor violence can lead to murder. In sharp contrast to other forms of domestic violence, honor violence is often condoned by families and communities, making it particularly difficult to identify and stop. Sadly, it often involves several perpetrators within the family or community.

Honor violence is a reality in the U.S., and alarmingly, the number of cases is increasing, making it clear that a more robust system for addressing these crimes is critical. The AHA Foundation responds to women and girls in crisis through counseling, information, and direct introductions to local service providers.

“The prevalence of honor violence and honor killings in the US will only increase unless we act now. We have a duty to protect these young women and to be a voice for them. Most importantly, it is the right thing to do.”
Detective Chris Boughey, Peoria, Arizona Police Department

Faisal Saeed Al Mutar at University of Maryland 01/07/2021

Faisal Saeed al-Mutar: Freedom of Expression in the Arab World. Faisal spoke about free speech and freedom of belief in the Muslim World during a breakout session at a Students for Liberty Conference at the University of Maryland.

He touched on the international human rights scores that are released from the Global Network for Rights and Development: Muslim countries tend to rank the lowest. For most Muslim-majority countries, Al Mutar said, there is no freedom of speech or freedom of belief; these enlightenment values have not, for the most part, reached this part of the world. But Al Mutar is seeking to change that.

Last week, a breakthrough in the global fight to end child marriage came when the United Kingdom government pledged to raise the minimum age of marriage in England and Wales to 18, without exception. Just days before, Rhode Island became the fifth US state to ban child marriage. These are important steps, but more work lies ahead, like Governor Andrew Cuomo making New York the sixth state to end child marriage.

Government officials in England and Wales have committed to closing the loophole of parental consent that allows 16 and 17 year olds to be married "as soon as legislative opportuniy arises." This is a win in the war against the exploitation of underaged boys and girls who are often coerced into marriage using this legal exception.

"There I met young girls, and many older women, who had been married before they could finish their education, and who had become young mothers while they themselves were still children. As a consequence, with limited education and marketable skills, they were now fighting for their families survival and attempting to increase their income security so the cycle of poverty did not continue.
