The Esposende Maritime Museum is a space dedicated to preserving and publicising the maritime history and culture of Esposende and Portugal. ⚓
📍Located in the former Shipwreck Rescue Centre (ESN) building, the Museum was born out of a restoration project led by the Fórum Esposendense Association. This work enabled not only the creation of the museum but also the return of the Shipwreck Relief service to the building after years of inactivity.
You can visit temporary exhibitions on maritime themes and the impressive Tower of Memory, with around a thousand photographs of men and women involved in maritime activities between 1893 and 1962. A real tribute to local memory! You can also visit the headquarters of the Fórum Esposendense and the Farol de Esposende newspaper, an auditorium and the remarkable shell collection of Colonel Adolfo Monteiro da Cruz. 🐚📸🌊
📅 Did you know?
Although inaugurated in 2012, the Museum began intensive work in 2008 to collect objects donated by private individuals. These unique and well-cared-for pieces bear witness to the region's maritime heritage. 📜
📍 Visit and explore Esposende's maritime legacy!

🚢 Viana do Castelo, Portugal: The Gil Eannes ship has returned home 🚢
After three weeks in the city's shipyards, the Gil Eannes museum ship is back at Viana do Castelo's commercial dock. Built-in 1955, this historic vessel underwent essential maintenance to preserve its hull and masts, ensuring its legacy continues.
Originally a hospital ship, the Gil Eannes supported the Portuguese cod-fishing fleet operating off Newfoundland and Greenland. After years of invaluable service, it was abandoned in Lisbon, nearly lost to time, until it was rescued and restored to become a symbol of maritime heritage. ⚓️
Today, the ship is managed by the Gil Eannes Foundation, a non-profit organisation that promotes cultural, tourist, and scientific initiatives, particularly those connected to the sea.
📍The Gil Eannes continues to inspire, serving as a bridge between Portugal's seafaring past and its ongoing commitment to maritime heritage.
PT - 🚢 Viana do Castelo, Portugal: O navio Gil Eannes regressou a casa 🚢

🌍 Join us in celebrating World Fisheries Day—a global initiative highlighting the importance of sustainable fisheries management. This day underscores the essential role of small-scale fishers in safeguarding food security and providing livelihoods for millions worldwide.
The history of World Fisheries Day dates back to 1997 when the World Forum on Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF) convened in New Delhi. Representatives from 18 countries united to establish the World Fisheries Forum and signed a declaration advocating for sustainable fishing practices and policies.
Recognising the urgent need to address fisheries issues, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the WFF proposed dedicating an international day to fisheries. In 2003, the FAO General Assembly adopted this proposal, officially designating November 21st as World Fisheries Day.
📍 This day serves as a call to action, raising awareness about the critical role of fisheries in global food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. It also promotes responsible fisheries management, tackling challenges like overfishing, illegal fishing, and climate change impacts.
