Mardi Gras has begun in New Orleans, and in that city, the celebration will go on for twelve days. Parades are an important part of Mardi Gras, so we've designed a small float that kids can make to use in daycare centers, pre-schools, and in elementary schools.

Although the one shown here was created to celebrate Hawaii's 50th year of statehood, the directions will work for any occasion. Just change the theme. Reusing a shoebox to create your float will help save money on art supplies, and it will keep materials out of the landfill.

For complete directions, see Design a Miniature Float at http://www.kid-at-art.com/htdoc/members/lesson84.html.

The new, featured art activity at The Imagination Factory is Create Artist Trading Cards. Making these mini-artworks is a great project for finishing the summer and helping kids keep in touch during the school year.

Artwork is done on one side, and name and contact info goes on the back. They take little in the way of art materials, so just use your imagination to create small works of art!
