Our next Pet of the Week is Sombra which means shadow in Spanish! Sombra’s name originally came from the fact that she was always hiding in the shadows, but over the years she's been slowly working on coming out of her shell and gaining more self-confidence. She is super cuddly but also has a sassy side and is very chatty. Surprisingly, she obeys commands and has recently been working on her recall when she ventures outside.

Phoebe is a fun and quirky cat who doesn’t let a missing leg slow her down! She was born with just her back right femur and was rescued after her owner couldn’t take care of her. Now she lives the good life and her favorite things to do include playing with her laser pointer, watching the fish in the fish tank, and terrorizing her dad while he sleeps (typical orange cat stuff). She loves to meet new people, play with all her toys, and of course help her dad study!!

Banana (Mr. Grumpy Seed Ju**ie) is a 28 year old cockatiel that is fueled by rage and seeds. He has taken a “new year, new me” approach to 2024 and has decided to start eating vegetables after *10* years of refusing to even look at one. His favorite snacks are anything that you're eating (it's his food too) and popcorn. In his free time, he enjoys eating, screaming, tearing up any paper products he can find, and staring at himself in the mirror. Banana will be 29 on March 25th and he can't wait to celebrate by screaming a little louder than usual and biting everyone he can 🥰

My name is Julia Melaragno and I'm from a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. In high school, I had a job cleaning horse stalls at the barn I grew up riding at and loved it! At the same time, I became very interested in the sciences, which is when I decided to combine my passions and pursue a career in Vet Med.

I studied Animal Sciences at Ohio State University and originally wanted to go into Small Animal General Practice. After working at ST Genetics Ohio Heifer Center, I found an even greater passion for cows and production medicine. I worked in the maternity barn for about 2 years, where I learned to assist in calvings, care for newborn calves, milk cows, scrub into c-sections, and so much more!

At Mizzou, I'm involved in Bovine Club, Small Ruminant and Camelid Club, Equine Club, Equine Paid-ICU, Foal Team, Theriogenology Club, and I'm participating in VRSP this summer with Dr. Celeste Morris! I traveled to the annual AABP conference in Milwaukee this September with Bovine Club and had the chance to catch up with old coworkers and network with so many professionals! I'm so grateful for all the opportunities I've had here so far - it's truly endless!

My current career goals are to work as a large animal ambulatory veterinarian, with a focus on dairy cattle medicine but I'm also open to wherever life takes me! I want to prove that although I may be short (at 5'2) and may not have grown up in the industry, I can still be a great large animal vet!

In my free time I love to hang out with my family and the new friends I've made while at school! I also have a 3 year old calico cat, "Cali", that I brought along on this adventure with me."

Saydee is a 5 year old cocker spaniel who loves to sleep, eat, and annoy her sisters (human included). Saydees favorite thing to do is sit by her sisters highchair and wait for food to fall. She LOVES going on car rides, and being the center of attention. Saydee is the queen of her house and she makes it known everyday! (See instagram for videos!)

Indy is a typical, cuddly, food obsessed orange cat. His love for all things edible goes as far as stealing food from backpacks and pans on the stove! Outside of eating, Indy enjoys a good snuggle on the bed and laying on his cat tree in the sun

Bo is a 4 year old Australian shepherd. He LOVES to play toys, but he also enjoys cuddling and taking lots of naps. He is an absolute mommas boy who won’t leave her side if she’s around and loves going to work to get pup cups. When he isn’t stuck studying with his mom he enjoys going on walks, running in the back yard, and going back home to see his sisters, Harper and Daisy.

Dakota is a 17-year-old Missouri Fox Trotter/Arabian gelding whose favorite activities include eating (obviously), begging for treats, going on trail rides, playing with his pasture buddy, and taking silly pics (usually with his tongue sticking out). He made the journey to Columbia when his mom started college, and has been the best excuse for a study break! Dakota may look like your average horse, but he really is just a big puppy dog who loves to follow you around and beg for food.

Renzo is a breed all his own because you won’t find a chunkier, happier, or more spoiled cat around. His body may look big, but his personality is even bigger. It’s clear to see how the nickname 'Fat Cat' started. He had a rough start to life after being in a house fire, but he is living his best second life in style getting all the love, naps, and treats he could ever want!

Frankie is a 3 year old pittie mix whose favorite activities include eating, napping in weird positions, and being his mom’s study buddy! His favorite treat is frozen fruit and he loves wearing clothes (especially his pajamas). Despite being a “dangerous breed” he is scared of very random objects such as fans, laundry baskets, and sharpies.

Kate is from the small farm town of Adrian, Missouri. She attended Missouri State University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in general business. Before vet school, Kate worked in a variety of vet clinics. There, she made great connections and learned so much! This variety allowed Kate to experience everything from exotics to equine. One of the clinics she worked for rehabilitated some wildlife, which exposed Kate to wild birds, opossums, raccoons, and her all-time favorite, a baby beaver!

Kate moved to Columbia in the summer of 2022 to work at an emergency clinic. There, she learned a lot about emergency medicine. Her heart missed the family atmosphere of a smaller practice, so she started working for a newly opened, family-owned mixed practice clinic over by Centralia.

Kate has a younger brother who is also attending Mizzou but is working on a Master’s Degree in accounting. Her parents reside in her hometown of Adrian, Missouri. Also, in her family, Kate has a French bulldog named Bear. Bear has gotten her through a lot, and she would not know what to do without his cuddles and t***s!

During her free time, Kate likes to walk around the farmer’s market, and when she is not there, you can catch her doing some puzzles and binge-watching docuseries.

After graduation, Kate plans to join a mixed general practice, possibly at her previous clinic or back near her hometown. Kate is passionate about small ruminants and reproduction, so she hopes to incorporate those as well!

The MU CVM Class of 2027 is selling candygrams to raise funds for our class. Embarking on the journey of veterinary education is both rewarding and challenging. Our class is determined to make this experience not only academically enriching but also personally fulfilling. To achieve this, the funds raised will be utilized to organize a variety of events, gatherings, and opportunities aimed at enhancing the cohesiveness and morale of the Class of 2027.

Candygrams are available for purchase by all MU CVM, VHC, and VMDL students, faculty and staff. They will be delivered on Wednesday, Feb. 14 to mailboxes, offices, and departments within those buildings. If you are unable to access the QR Code on the attached flier, candygrams may also be purchased using this link in our bio!

Our next pet of the week is the legendary Pooh! Pooh is a 1 year old CHUNKY domestic short hair that likes belly rubs. He and his brother (Winnie) we adopted together. Poohs main activities include: playing with his crinkle Ramon noodle toy during all hours of the night, engulfing his food, and snuggling with his mom or brother (not his dad, they are enemies). While sleeping, he snores quite loud and will get a tap on the head from his brother. Poohs attitude will change shortly since his diet food comes in this weekend.

For our next Pet of the Week we have Brinley! Brinley is a 1-year-old sassy dachshund who enjoys walks on the beach and cuddles with her mom. She is known to be helpful when it comes to directional terms and is a perfect example of a carpal valgus queen. She is currently on a California vacation for IP3, but she’ll be back and ready to help her mom study in IP4.
