Presenting the glimpses from our seminar on 'Number Theory and the Science of Secure Communication'.
The Department of Mathematics, Miranda House held a seminar on the topic 'Number Theory and the Science of Secure Communication' on 4th October 2024. Prof. Shanta Laishram, Department of Mathematics, Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi, discussed about the concepts of number theory and the foundation of modern cryptography.
Here are the key takeaways from our seminar on 'Number Theory and the Science of Secure Communication' held on 4th October 2024.

appears to be there; feels unrealistic to get..."

Mathematical Explanation:
"The photograph is capturing the moments after sunset. The redness of sun is floating on the clouds which is being mirrored in the logged water of the field which creates Horizon like scenes. This photographs is conveying the different perceptions and ideas of a common thing that need not to be same.Independence is the sacrifice of peoples of different ideologies, different backgrounds(pasts) dedicating their present to a CONVERGING DREAM (future)of Independent India.
The idea of convergence is reflected from the photograph. We can never get to Horizon, but it seems like by continuing in the path, we will be able to get there. Similarly, A sequence
, where n is a natural number, never becomes zero practically but it feels like will be zero if we keep trying with larger and larger values of n.
"
Progressing to the “Golden” Hour.
Mathematical Explanation:
"The Golden bird lost its lustre to the abyss of the British empire, however that never stopped it from making its flight towards progress.
The image can be interpreted as a phase space diagram. The flying bird represents a trajectory through time, with the horizon separating between the past and future. The reflection creates a mirror symmetry. This duality captures India's journey, where the present (the horizon) is a reflection point between past and future states.
The sunset/sunrise acts as a bifurcation point, marking transitions between different regimes (day to night or vice versa), much like how India transitions between different eras. The continuous flight path of the bird, reflected in the water, forms a closed loop in this phase space, suggesting a cyclical nature to India's progress - learning from the past while moving towards the future.
The symmetry between the real and reflected images also evokes the concept of duality in mathematics, where two seemingly different systems can be isomorphic or equivalent under certain transformations. This represents how India's past and future, while appearing distinct, are intrinsically connected and inform each other."
Tricolour Lights Up Nights.
Mathematical Explanation:
"The hanging bridge photograph beautifully captures the essence of India's convergence of past, present, and future. The bridge symbolizes connection and unity, linking different eras and cultures, while its architecture blends traditional and contemporary styles, reflecting the convergence of past and present. The photo represents the threads that weave together India's diverse heritage and modern aspirations, suspending time and connecting eras in a powerful visual representation.
From a mathematical perspective, the bridge's structure and patterns exhibit intriguing elements, including geometric shapes, symmetry, and intricate networks. These mathematical aspects add another layer of depth and beauty to the image, highlighting the precision and harmony that underlie the bridge's design."
"""India, a nation where modernity and tradition intertwine seamlessly""".
Mathematical Explanation:
"India thrives on technological innovation and dynamism and its rural areas preserve enduring customs and lifestyles. The convergence of India’s past, present, and future is characterised by a continuous dialogue between tradition and innovation, heritage and progress. It reflects a nation that honours its historical roots while dynamically shaping its trajectory in the modern world.
My photograph captures the Indian Railways. The Railways often display symmetrical designs, such as the alignment of tracks and the repetitive structure of rail bridges or station architecture which is in consonance with mathematical geometry and patterns."
Even in the darkest times, we shall move, grow, and exist with Grace.
Mathematical Explanation:
"The iron pillar's construction involves sophisticated engineering and mathematical principles, such as metallurgy and material science. The alignment of the pillar within the door-like structure can be seen as a study of geometric precision and structural integrity.
The alignment of the iron pillar within the architectural framework can highlight geometric principles, such as symmetry, proportion, and alignment. These elements reflect mathematical concepts that are fundamental to both historical and contemporary architecture.
The photograph taken with precision and timed perfectly with the airplane flying over it, showcases how the existence of this photograph is a representation of Convergence of India's Past, Present and Future."
