Distance to Mars:
The distance between the Earth and Mars varies all the time and it changes between a minimum distance of 54.6 million km to a maximum distance of 401 million km with an average of 225 million km, however, the minimum distance is a very rare event, and the closest distance in recorded history was in 2003 at 56 million km was the closest to earth in more than 50,000 years and it will not be that close again till 2287.
Usually the distance to Mars has a cycle of 15 to 17 years and it will be advantageous to make the trip to the red planet at the minimal distance during this cycle, however, the window for the best time for the trip with minimal fuel and reasonable trip duration is every 26 months.
On July 2018 the distance to Mars would be 57.6 million km, while in October 2020, it will be 62.1 million km, and in both times the two bodies are lined up for launching a trip to our neighboring planet.
