Nicolae Iorga is one of the most important cultural personalities and the most prolific historian Romania ever had, with thousands of his works published. His bust, made by Oscar Han and cast in bronze, can be admired in the Museum of the University of Bucharest. Bronze changes its colour in contact with air, from brown to green shades.

Magenta on White : Colour as a Medium of Change?

No doubt: David Hilbert is one of the most influential mathematicians of the late 19th and early 20ieth centuries. He was a trailblazing theorist and teacher of mathematics, a change maker and humanist in academia and a guiding head in challenging times.

The colour sprayed across the face of his bust located in Georg-August-Universität Göttingen historical Aula, was an attack against the changes in academic teaching in 2009. Student protesters occupying the university main building were attacking the Bologna reforms making it an issue of academia and politics at European level.

The busts in the Aula were replicas and could easily be replaced. Hilbert's head, with the violent tag across the eyes thus became a new reminder, today Forum Wissen GÖ: Academia and research are controlled by power, with a potential to erupt like magenta on white.
