Don’t forget to give for Day One. The departmental challenge is still going. It is based on number of donors not the amount raised. The minimum donation is only $10. Please think about giving to one of the scholarships in honor of two of our math majors.

This year we are celebrating two projects for Day One. Both projects are close to my heart. When I started working here at Tech 15 years ago, I quickly came to realize how special this department was. We don’t just provide an exceptional education, we also build a community. Our two chosen projects for Day One are two scholarships established to honor two members of that community. Jacob Simpson and Sage Lindsay were both majors in our department and my advisees. Both were exceptional human beings who were lost far too soon. Their families established scholarships in their honor. This year, for Day One, we are asking for members of our Montana Tech math community to donate to their scholarships. Jack and Leah McCarthy have generously pledged to match the first $1,000 in donations made on the first day of the scholarship drive. Please consider making a donation to honor Jacob and Sage. Learn more about their scholarships HERE.

You are all probably aware of the recent deadly earthquakes. This tragedy has a personal connection to our department. Dr. Suzan Gazioglu grew up in Turkey and has many friends and family still living there. The earthquake struck southeast Turkey. Ten cities with combined population of over 13 million people were affected. According to recent reports, over 12,145 buildings collapsed or were badly damaged. Today the death toll passed 40,000 and it is likely to double or more.
Dr. Gazioglu has set up a webpage to help raise money for the earthquake victims. This website is affiliated with "Bridge to Turkiye", a US based nonprofit charity with a good track record of delivering assistance quickly and efficiently in partnership with local Turkish organizations. The donations are controlled by the charity not by individuals.
Below is the link to the fundraising website. We hope that you will consider donating.

Montana Tech's Day One Fundraising starts tomorrow. This year, the math department has chosen to ask for donations to two memorial scholarships: The Jacob Simpson Memorial Math Annual Scholarship and The SageStrong-Sage Lindsay Memorial Scholarship. Sage and Jacob both left an enormous mark on our department during their time at Montana Tech. A donor has agreed to match the first $1,000 in donations made to both of these scholarships. Please help us to honor the memory of Sage and Jacob.
